What to Know when Riding Foreign Taxis

Jeffrey Hanes
If you don't own a car, chances are you are faced with the daily hassle of public transportation. There are various ways to get to your destination even without the perks of driving. There is the subway, buses, and trains. These are fast and efficient but are rather unsafe if you are not street-smart.

The fastest option for you is the taxi cab. With this, you can be sure that you will arrive at your exact location with the comfort of full air-condition and privacy. However, you still need to be vigilant because the road is not safe for anyone.

1. Wait for a taxi in the loading and unloading areas only. This is where you'll find a good quality taxi because drivers have the guts to get passengers and offer good services. Don't just stand at the corner of the road and wait. You don't even know if the place where you are standing is a loading area. Read signs and ask police officers to be sure.

2. It is important that you do some research prior to your travel. At least, be familiar with the famous landmarks. You don't need to memorize all the streets and corners. Avoid shortcuts because this will only confuse you more. You don't have the right to do so especially if you are new to a place.

3. Observe taxis around. Be safe and observe the dominating physical characteristics of cabs. Don't hire cabs that have very different from other taxis. If most taxis are yellow, shy away from red or white ones. It is safe to be sure.

4. Protect your luggage by always keeping close to it as much as possible. Even if you are carrying very heavy bags, keep it with you inside the cab. You never know when a mishap could occur.

5. Taxis with visible phone numbers, plate numbers, and company names are most likely to be legitimate and of good quality. Hence, it is good if you select these cabs. Showing these details manifests that these taxis are not afraid to expose their contact numbers because they could attest to their services.

6. Some countries allow sharing of taxi services with other passengers. If you are not comfortable with it, courteously but firmly say "No!". It is also much safer to ride without strangers because hidden agenda between the driver and the "passenger" may suddenly arise.
