Septicaemia is a condition in which dangerous bacteria gets into the bloodstream. This bacteria is usually harmless bacteria that we already have in other places in our bodies (such as the mouth and the organs). When this bacteria is introduced into the bloodstream, however, the effects can be fatal. Think of it this way: The bacteria is fine on the left side of the fence, but when it crosses over, it becomes violent.
What are the symptoms of septicaemia?
Septicaemia can be difficult to detect. Sometimes, even, there are no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they include the following.
· Flu like conditions (fever, overall "sick" feeling)
· Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
· Increased heart rate
· Shortness of breath
· Anxiety attacks
· Pain in the abdomen
Because these symptoms are so non-specific, septicaemia is often undetected.
Who is at risk for getting septicaemia?
A healthy immune system will fend of septicaemia. When the bad bacteria are introduced into the bloodstream, the body is able to fight it off. For this reason, people who have a history of an unstable immune system, or people who are sick, have a higher risk for developing septicaemia. Septicaemia can also be caused by an invasive medical procedure. Any procedure involving something accidentally being cut open could cause septicaemia. Procedures such as dental procedures, colonoscopies, and catheter insertion could all lead to the development of septicaemia.
Is septicaemia dangerous?
Yes, it can even lead to coma or death. In addition, septicaemia can reduce the amount of blood getting to your vital organs, causing you to become very ill.
How do I prevent septicaemia?
As mentioned before, a healthy immune system is your best defense against septicaemia. If your body is fit and tuned, it is ready to fend off attackers. If you are in poor health, your risk is significantly higher for not only septicaemia, but other conditions as well. As always, a healthy diet and regular exercise are encouraged.
I think I might have septicaemia. Can they test for it?
Yes, there are tests for this. A doctor will conduct blood tests, medical history questionnaires, urine tests, and others to test for septicaemia.
How is septicaemia treated?
There are a number of ways to treat septicaemia. If the object that caused the bacteria to enter the blood stream (such as a piece of dental equipment) is still in place, it will be taken out. Intravenous antibiotic treatment will also start. This can be lifesaving! One in four cases of septicaemia end in death, so quick diagnosis and treatment is very important (betterhealth.vic.goc).
Basically, if you are a healthy person and haven't had any recent invasive procedures, you most likely do not have septicaemia. If you have a history of sickness, or you have recently had an invasive procedure and have the symptoms listed previously, contact your doctor immediately. This information could save your life!
