I moved to Las Vegas about 6 months ago from Minnesota, and I was sure in for a shock with the weather difference. Minnesota is only warm for about 4 months out of the year. Las Vegas is only mildly cooler about 3 months out of the year. In the winter I was used to 30 degrees below zero. Now the overnight lows in January are 30 degrees above zero. To be honest, I am not even sure if it went below freezing at all this winter. It was absolutely wonderful.
The nights do get chilly out here. When the sun goes down, I recommend bringing a sweater in the fall and spring months because it does get a little chilly. As soon as the sun comes back up though, it heats up fast. The summer months are more of a problem. When the heat goes up it can get miserable.
If you are planning a vacation in one of the summer months (May-Oct.), plan on packing a lot of shorts and tank tops. But, bring plenty of sunscreen because the sun is so hot. Also, make sure it is waterproof sunscreen if you plan on swimming at all during your vacation. You will want a lot if you are traveling with children. Even if you are in the shade you can still get sun. I recommend sitting by the pool to cool off, and drink lots of water so you do not get dehydrated. Although the alcoholic beverages may look tempting, they will not help keep your body hydrated. They will actually make it worse.
On a positive note, anywhere indoors has plenty of air conditioning. To cool off in the heat of the day, I recommend going indoors and enjoying a long lunch. Or if you like to gamble, sit down at your favorite slot machine and play a little. This town is basically 24 hours a day so save some of your favorite outdoor activities for early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun goes down.
Beating the heat is easy to do as long as you limit your times outdoors in the heat of the day. It is usually the hottest between the hours of 2:00p.m.-5:00p.m. During that time have a late lunch or go back to your hotel room and catch an afternoon nap before you go out for the evening. Even a refreshing swim in your hotel pool will do the trick. Enjoy your trip to Las Vegas.
