Kundalini yoga is a spiritual type of yoga that is suited for those who want to include meditation in their practice and those who seek a higher state of consciousness. The name given to the energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine is Kundalini. This type of yoga works to awaken this energy. It also seeks to release the dormant power within each practitioner. This will happen as you get in touch with the core essence of who you are.
A class in Kundalini yoga will vary from week to week. This type of yoga features many series of targeted practices. However, if you have a particular goal in mind, be sure to ask your teacher. They will be able to recommend a series of practices that will help you reach your goals.
Each series within Kundalini yoga is called a kriya. You may pursue several kriyas at the same time. One might be aimed at stimulating the immune system, another could awaken the heart shakra. And, still another could be preparing you for deep meditation. The exercises within each kriya are recommended in a certain order. They should each be done for a certain amount of time and for a certain number of days.
One of the goals of Kundalini yoga is meditation. A meditation session may include mudras, mantras or chanting. The chants might be short mantras, or they could be longer devotional chants.
Yogi Bhajan is the guru of Kundalini yoga. He taught in New Mexico until his death in 2004. His goal in coming to the West was not to gain followers but to spread the teaching of yoga. He was quite successful, as there are centers worldwide.
No matter what type of Hatha yoga you choose to practice, you will feel better both physically and mentally. The type of yoga you choose should reflect your goals and how you want to accomplish them. Hopefully, this description of Kundalini yoga will help you make this decision.
