What is a Leader?

Keith Dailey
Most people think they know what a leader is. But the truth is, their conceptions of what a leader is supposed to be are mostly befuddled and unwarranted. A lot of people seem to think that leadership is merely all about power. This is definitely not the case. Leadership is not about harassing people or controlling them in any way by putting their fears into place. Leadership is about encouraging people to reach their organization's goals, putting everybody on the same level, and helping them see the organization as a whole from afar. Bosses are not necessarily leaders. Just because someone is in charge of a group of people does not make them a leader.

People become followers to a leader once they see that the person they are looking up to has a clear sense of purpose that they are driven to achieve or reach. You will only be followed by a group of people if they see that there is a distinct place you wish to go. If you have no idea where you want to go, no one will even think about following your lead.

Leadership has nothing to do with making other individuals do things for you. It is about knowing what you know, doing what you do, and being who you are; it is a reflection of what your followers should wish to become themselves.

Most experts will agree that good leadership is based on the sheer confidence and trust that your subordinates put upon you. Confidence and trust can only be built when there is trustworthiness and high ethics within your relationships with people. And these relationships must be good and strong.

Once the sheer confidence and trust has been earned, you must share your objectives and goals with those who truly wish to hear them.

Proper communication is also always essential when it comes to good leadership by showing others that you know what you are doing and are actually an expert at it. You must be able to prove that you can look at situations, decide on what is right and what is wrong, and actually find a proper solution to the ongoing problems that you face at hand.

Leaders cannot do everything and they should not claim to know that they can do everything and only need to rely on themselves, no one else. Leaders should see the talents and skills of their subordinates and work with them as one cohesive unit in order to succeed in whatever they do.

The most important thing to know is that turning into a leader takes a significant amount of time. It never just happens overnight. So work on your skills, think as a leader, and one day, you may even become a very good one.
