What I Learned from Ellen Degeneres

Debra Elwick
The Ellen Degeneres Show is a widely popular talk show that I am not able to watch very often. It is always fascinating and I am reminded how much I enjoy her sense of humor. Unfortunately, she had a moment where she was not able to use her sense of humor to erase the pain that others were feeling and that she mistakenly had a part.

There was a serious misunderstanding about a dog that she had adopted but could not keep. In the best interests of the dog, she found a good, loving and caring home for it. Unfortunately, the adoption paperwork stated that she could not give the dog away in the event that she could not keep it. In this case, the dog has been removed from the replacement home and returned to the agency. The family is understandably devastated, as we all are when we lose a pet, and Ellen was not unaffected by this incident. Hopefully, everything will turn out well for all the parties involved, including the dog.

As usual, Ellen has enlightened me about something, but this was serious. It made me realize how important it is to read any paperwork that I sign. This is a very important lesson that we probably all need to learn. We all know to read loan paperwork, but we need to pay attention to any form that requires our signature. It is very important that we understand what we are signing and any rules or regulations that we will need to follow. Our lives are very busy and we do not always take the time that is needed to look over any documents. We also are accustomed to checking the I Agree boxes for anything we sign up for over the Internet. Agreeing to things seem to be everyday occurrences, but now, thanks to Ellen and her dilemma, I will take the time to understand to what I am agreeing.

I work part-time and have four kids. We are anticipating the arrival of #5 by the end of August. I have also started college online. So far, so good. I love to read and look forward to sharing my writing...  View profile
