What to Do with Your Leftover Thanksgiving Turkey

Lisa Stevens
With today being Thanksgiving many families across America are celebrating with big Turkey feasts and all the fixings on the side. But what do you do when you are finished eating but there is still a ton of Turkey left over? 23% of Americans say they have left over Turkey after their Thanksgiving meal that they end up throwing away. This article will give you some tips I like to use when it comes to Thanksgiving Turkey leftovers.

Freezing It -

This method is simple and one that I like to use when I divide up my leftovers. Turkey survives freezing very well and comes out dry when defrosted. You can easily put the leftovers in a one gallon Ziploc bag and put it in the freezer to use later. My favorite things to use the Turkey leftovers in are soup and casseroles where the juices can soak into the dry meat and give them the same juicy taste they had before at Thanksgiving.

Turkey Stew -

Making a Turkey Stew is easy and you can add even more leftovers from Thanksgiving to the stew like carrots, potatoes and onions. Add some parsley, thyme, a little oregano and salt and pepper if you want to add a little flavor to your stew, you don't have to add those to make a good stew though. Add broth and the veggies and cook until they are boiling for about 10 minutes. Add the turkey after the vegetables are boiling and cook until the vegetables are soft.

Turkey Fajitas and Tacos -

I love fajitas and the best part about them is they are easy to make with whatever you happen to have lying around in your refrigerator, or on your dinner table after Thanksgiving dinner.

You should refrigerate the Turkey meat rather than freeze it for this meal. First warm up the turkey and serve it instead of chicken or beef with some grilled, sliced peppers and grilled onions. Add them all to a tortilla with cheese to seal all of it in and enjoy. This is also a great way to make Turkey tacos with warming up the Turkey the same way as the fajitas' but without melting the cheese. Just fold the tortilla, add the Turkey, cheese, peppers and onions and enjoy.

Turkey and Noodles Soup -

This is another simple meal you can make with Turkey that you have frozen or put in the refrigerator. It's the same as making Chicken Noodle soup but with Turkey. First cook some egg noodles in a broth along with carrots, celery and browned onions if you want. After add as much Turkey as you want and enjoy.
Turkey Chili -

I love a good home made chili. This one is simple and I will tell you exactly what I use when I make chili. Some people will agree or disagree about beans in chili but I love them so I am adding them to this recipe. You can exclude them if you want to though.

First warm up the Turkey in a large skillet pan for about 5 minutes.
Next add the beans, I use spicy chili beans in my chili. Also add a can of diced tomatoes.
Mix in a packet of Mild, Medium or Hot McCormick chili powder. I like to use Hot.
Mix it altogether and leave on the stove for 20 minutes or until the beans are soft.

Connie, you can freeze it to have it later. I usually don't keep it in the freezer longer than January 2nd. Everyone is different but I've never had problems with it being in there that long.

Excellent ideas here. Nicley done (and I reckon I'll be eatin' turkey sandwiches for lunch at work until Christmas!)
