This week all my watermelons had to be picked. There were only 5 huge ones but that was 4 too many to eat at once. We took one over to my partners family and then that left four. I had loved and water them for months so wanted to find a way to utilize them. Well one of them, I dropped on the way into the kitchen and cracked it. I set it in the sink wondering what now to do with it. . We already had one that we were eating. The problem, too ,was it was overripe and needed to be eaten immediately so I got creative. Here is what I came up with:
Watermelon juice:
This is a light sweet juice to drink that is organic, no sugar added, and easy to fix. Open the melon, dig out all the pulp, take out the seeds and throw into the blender. Two minutes later you have a wonderful fresh fruit drink.
Frozen Watermelon/ Blueberry Frozen Yogurt:
Buy plain yogurt in the large containers. Take the yogurt out and put into a blender. On top of the yogurt add frozen blue berries and watermelon pulp and mix. If it is not sweet enough, add a tablespoon or two of sugar and blend. Then put it back in the yogurt container and the rest that won't fit into another container and freeze. Its wonderful, organic, contains less sugar than ice cream or commercial frozen yogurt and lasts for a long time.
Watermelon/ Blueberry Smoothie:
Watermelon juice, watermelon pulp, blue berries, yogurt and blend. It was wonderful and just sweet enough! You could have added other kinds of fruit but I had the blue berries already.
Gardening with Miracle Grow!
So I hope this helps all of you. I have to tell you that we moved into our new house at the end of May. I had not the time nor energy to cultivate, add amendments and make a proper garden plot. There was a huge 20 foot heap of dirt in one area of the back yard in a sunny area. The ground did not look fertile at all. I bought miracle grow planter mix, dug holes, and planted watermelon, pumpkins, squash, and eggplant. I did use plants and not seeds to speed up the process. They grew like the jolly green giant had planted them. I also fertilized them with miracle grow fertilizer every week. This I know helped because of the soil quality. Then fruit appeared but I was not sure at all that any of fruit would be fit to eat. Starting in Aug we got squash and eggplant and all of it has been wonderful. The taste is unbelievable. The watermelon have a melt in your mouth flavor. So if you lack time and ability to do the garden the proper way...try the Miracle Grow way. I am still in disbelief that my produce is so good considering the way it was all done. This was the first garden I had been able to plant and I love having my own fresh vegetables and fruit.
A hint on sow bugs. When we planted the egg plants, the sow bugs nearly destroyed them. I found that red pepper powder layered around the root area of the seedlings really stopped the sow bugs from getting on the tender plants. I did not want to put on insect powder or spray.
So I hope this helps any of you reading this. Please try it and its great for kids!
