What is it Like to Own a Boxer Dog?

Ashley B
Many people have asked me "What is it like to own a boxer dog? Are they aggressive? They are alot to handle, huh?" I can answer all these questions in one simple word. That answer is No. January of 2007 I was browsing Craigslist and I noticed a lady from the same county that I live in that was giving away a dog. Since my boyfriend has been wanting a dog for some time now, we decided to contact the lady about the dog. As soon as I saw the pictures of her dog, I could not help but tell her I wanted this dog right away! That Saturday she stopped by with Honey [the dog] and I fell completely in love with her. I didn't care how big she was, or anything. She was the most cutest and friendliest dog I've ever met in my entire life.

So seven months into having her, she has not been one problem for myself or my boyfriend. From doing my research about Boxer's prior to seeing Honey, I knew this would be my kind of dog. I had researched that Boxer's are very laid back, good listeners, and very smart dogs. Boy, was that right! Honey is very laid back and loves to sleep on her dog bed, and play with her doggie ropes and bones. She has not once chewed up anything else besides her toys. She is house broken, and has not once had an accident inside the house. She does not bark at all, nor growls. When she has to go outside, she will stand by the front door or come up and nudge my arm. She listens very well, and knows how to do the basic dog tricks; jump, sit, lay, come. She is wonderful with other dogs and children. She loves going for long walks, and seeing everything and everyone. Not to mention she is the most beautiful dog that I have ever seen. I have never gotten so many compliments before about her. Everyone tells me what a great dog she is and how beautiful she is.

As for her shedding. She has a very short coat of hair, and she didn't shed alot when we first got her. However since the weather has changed, it has became alot more worst. As much as she sheds, I am surprised she has not lost all her fur. She does love to be brushed, and will sit pretty for you while you do it.

I must tell you she loves food. She will sit and beg until you give her something. Her diet consists of dry dog food with a little bit of wet canned food mixed in as well. She loves ice cubes!

Overall, I would definitely recommend a boxer dog to anyone who is interested in getting one. They are wonderful dogs!

They are great dogs. They can get rambunctious indoors without enough exercise, but they are loving and protective, but not to the point of being overly aggressive. Good article.
