What is the Lil Wayne G Commercial For?

Aida Ekberg
The commercial featured rapper Lil Wayne and didn't really ever specify what product it was trying to get consumers to buy. Searches on Google Trends for "Lil Wayne commercial", "what is G", "G commercial" and "SVC Inc" have all be volcanic this evening, and thanks to an astute blogger on a Stock Market Analysis blog, I can tell you exactly what this product is.

The blogger points out that Derek Jeter was in the commercial. Jeter is a Gatorade spokesman, so he put two and two together and realized that Gatorade must be revamping its products with new labeling and a clever marketing campaign: one that gets potential consumers searching the web for a product that is so exciting that its commercial doesn't even reveal what it is. Check out Gatorade's website and click on where it says "G", and you'll see the basic greenish-yellow Gatorade wearing a hip new label. Look on the right side of the screen and you'll see in tiny letters "SVC, Inc.", the corporation that owns Gatorade.

The web is a great way to promote products, and commercials, television shows, artists, and films have all benefited from it and had an effect on what Internet users are searching for. 'The Dark Knight' had a web-based marketing campaign centered on the site whysoserious.com that got fans worked into a frenzy by playing along in a few different, complex games, one of which was a country-wide scavenger hunt. Television shows like 'Family Guy' all have a big impact on search trends, and searches like "Laura Bush killed a guy", "Bird is the Word", and many other references the show has made always top the Google Trends list anytime it airs. Even prankster-created celebrity death rumors, one of the most recent being that comedian Katt Williams died in a plane crash, can help get them back in the public eye.

So perhaps Internet searches are the future of advertising. After all, it gets people thinking about a product for more than the few seconds that a commercial airs and makes them feel as if they're interacting with it, in a way. People love a good mystery, and using the web to unlock the secret to a mysterious commercial could be the key to successful future marketing.
