What to Look for when Buying a New Furnace

When the time comes to replace your existing furnace most homeowners are usually faced with several decisions to make. Furnace replacement is an expensive investment and should be considered carefully. It is also not a job the average homeowner can undertake as their own project so professional installation is usually required.

What kind of furnace will you get?

The type of furnace you have can make an enormous impact on the type of system you choose. If you like your existing furnace system, and get good efficiency from it, this may be your deciding factor. However, if you are thinking of making a change in furnace type, you will need to keep in mind that other changes may need to be made as well. Changing from propane or other gas to electric may require an upgrade in your electrical system. Changing to propane or oil will require you to add a storage tank. Keep these changes in mind when evaluating your costs.

Availability of fuel:

If you are switching to a gas fueled furnace be sure you have a reliable fuel provider. If you want to have a natural gas furnace be sure that natural gas is provided in your area. If natural gas is available but not already plumbed to your home the expenses can quickly add up.

Energy Star rating:

Check the Energy Star rating on the furnace you plan to buy. Energystar.gov has ratings available for you to use. Manufacturers of furnaces should also have this information available. Generally the more efficient the furnace, the less the cost of operation. Keep in mind the cost of fuel or electricity when making your calculations. An inexpensive fuel source can make up for a less efficient furnace.

Reliability of brand:

You will want to get a furnace that is reliable and does not break down frequently. While there is no real way to be sure that you will not get a "lemon", some research on your part will help. Checking on-line for unbiased reports on furnaces may take some time but can prove well worth the investment. Ask friends and neighbors what kind of furnace they have and how they like it. Also be sure that the brand you get has locally trained service personnel. Finally get the best guarantee you can. The cheapest furnace is not always going to be the best furnace if you spend a fortune in repairs.

Rebates

Check to see if there are any rebates being offered on the brand of furnace you would like to purchase. Manufacturers and distributors may have special incentives. You should also check to see if there are any tax rebates available. Utility companies, in some areas, are also offering rebates and incentives on new furnace installations. You may be able to get a very good buy from taking advantage of these incentives or rebates.

Estimates:

It is usually best to get several estimates from different contractors before making your final choice. Do not be rushed into making a decision. You may be offered an option of, "If you buy it right now, you will receive X amount off." If you are offered this ask if you can call back in a day or two with your answer. These types of discounts are sometimes offered to prevent the salesman, or estimator, from having to make a return trip. If they do not have to return you may still get a discount. If you are being pressured it might be best to steer clear of that particular contractor.
