When you are searching for wearable fly fishing gear you want something that is comfortable, that will stay dry, and something that is practical for wearing overextended periods of time.
Wading boots-Having boots that are waterproof is a must, but you'll also want to go one step further. You will need something that has good traction, both on and off dry land. Nothing would be worse then slipping on a rock and falling into the water.
Jacket-When purchasing a jack first think light and insulated. When shopping look for a stretchy fabric that fits well especially at the elbow. It is much harder to cast if the jacket is big and bulky. Also it is a good idea to look for something with cargo pockets. These are great for keeping spare gear in so you do not always need to wad out of the water.
Pants-Fast drying material is optimal when purchasing pants. Zippered pockets, to hold more of your gear, is another thing to look for when choosing the right fly fishing pants. For added comfort think about purchasing pants that Velcro off at the knee. When you do take a break on shore you will be able to Velcro them off for awhile, thus making a more comfortable experience.
Socks- It is suggested that for socks you wear whatever is comfortable for you within your boot. Thin and breathable are a good option. Always bring an extra pair in case the unexpected happens. Nothing is worse than having cold wet feet.
Hat- A basic fishing hat is always a great place to hook extra lures to. The hat should cover your entire head with a breathable fabric. Think of buying one with SPF protection built in.
Fly Rod, Fly Reel, and Fly Fishing Line-These items are a definite must for fly fishing. There are hundreds out there to chose from. They vary by size, style, weight, material, and brand. The main thing when you are buying a rod, reel, and line be sure they complement one another. The reel needs to be good quality because that is going to do the most work when you are reeling in your prize fish. The line needs to be matched with the lures to be sure it can handle the weight and so forth. When it comes to fly fishing all of these items need to work together if you want to be successful in catching fish.
Fishing gear bag-This is great to hold all your items together. Look for one that is not only waterproof but also has a separate spot for breakables; lures can be fragile. You can place your smaller tackle boxes in here as well as a few drinks and snacks for your day of fishing. Another suggestion is to put a pocket knife in your bag because you never know when it will come in handy (possibly to cut a line). Another option is to use a small tool like the Leatherman; its small and multifunctional will hundreds of options for usage.
