What to Look Out for when Purchasing a Used Car

Chapati
You want to buy a used car? Having a car can be a blessing or a curse. Having car trouble in the middle of the highway is a driver's worst nightmare. Ask anyone with experience.

Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision when you are buying a used car.

How Much Can You Afford?

You have to decide on how much you can afford for a used car because used cars have price ranges that may or not fit into your budget. Some dealers will want you to buy a more expensive car in order to increase their commission. Stand firm on your financial plan, remember, you do not want to buy a car you cannot afford and risk the possibility of having it repossessed.

What Do You Want From Your Car?

This is a very important question because it will help you decide what type of car will be suitable for you. Ask yourself these questions:

1) Do I want a car that will take me to and from work?

2) Do I need the car for my business? (delivery services, et cetera)

3) Will I be travelling a lot with the car?

This will help you narrow your search for a car and save you the trouble of going from dealer to dealer because searching for a car can be very stressful.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Don't let the nice paint job of a used car fool you, a used car is a used car! When buying a used car check the mileage, it is advisable not to buy a car that has a very high mileage, for example, 160,000 miles and above. But understand that low mileage on a car does not necessarily implied that the car is good. Watch out for signs of rolled back odometers (which can be done to deceive a potential buyer into believing that the car's mileage is low), watch out also for excessive body restoration. The best thing is to check the history of the car before you even think about buying it. The more used a car is, the more problems the car is likely to give you.

Don't buy a car based on what you heard somebody say; do your research as well.

Buy A Car That You Can Maintain

You may be tempted to buy a used luxury car at a bargain price only to discover that you end up spending an awful lot of time and money to maintain it. Yes, luxury cars are stylish and comfortable, but do you want to spend your entire pay check on maintaining your car? Someone I know bought a luxury car at a bargain price only to discover that immediately he had to change the exhaust pipe. He went to the hardware store and discovered that the spare part of his luxury car costs more than he made in a month! He quickly sold it and bought himself a car he could easily maintain without breaking a sweat.

Let's face it, used cars are far cheaper than brand new ones and they can do everything that a new car can do. The best way to really enjoy your used car is to choose wisely because you will definitely not want to be taking constant trips to the mechanic, allowing them milk you dry.
