The choice of what to major in after you've earned that sacred admissions letter can be a daunting task. Chances are you have dozens of options in front of you and a lot of them could fit into your goals. Well, if you are still unsure on what exactly your destined major is--consider psychology.

Psychology is a broad subject therefore, offers a mecca of options about exactly what topics you can study. You will have the options to study the scientific workings of the human body, the social interaction of humans, sexual behavior, clinical studies, communication, and many others topics. These options will give you the student a well-rounded education that can open doors to any field of future work. Many psychology programs offer hands on practice in all of these topics in the form of internships, co-ops, and case studies. This training will give your resume worthy experience which will translate into better post-graduation job offers!

There are many myths that surround the field of psychology, giving it a relatively inferior reputation. One very common myth surrounding psychology is that the field is only designed for those who want to be clinicians or researchers. The truth is, the field of psychology is for anyone who wants a college education they can market in the future. Your psychology degree can open the doors to other fields such as education, human resources, human services, retail, public relations and many others. You can attain an array of jobs in these fields with just a bachelor's degree. This diverse marketability will also give you the option to change careers if you wish to.

Another common myth about psychology is that employers are not impressed about the skills a degree in psych provides. This could not be farther from the truth. Employers are excited by the prospect of an employee that understands people and can effectively communicate with them. Examples of employers who are out looking for successful psychology majors are non-profit organizations (United Way, Red Cross, Goodwill) government/state departments, advertising agencies, marketing firms, schools and many others. It is a guarantee that, as a psychology major, you will be able to find gainful employment!

Despite all of the wonderful things a degree in psychology can offer you, you will have to work for the benefits. In my opinion, to majoring in psychology will only be an interesting and beneficial experience for you if you have a genuine interest in how the world of humans revolves and why it does so. You will learn of a wealth of valuable information to better yourself and others if you put forth a little bit of effort.

So, how exactly do you go about being a successful psychology major? Get involved. Join campus clubs and organizations to network with other psychology majors and professors to gain even more resume worthy skills. Also, stay focused on your goals.
