Starting from Scratch

Every man is a leader. Your leadership skills lie in you. They are either unnoticed or you ignore them. Your can revive them and become a great leader. The character that every great leader possesses is inborn in each and every one of us. We have lost some of these positive traits while we grow.

It is very unfortunate that the aspect of leading others cannot be taught in schools. We must take upon ourselves to regenerate the leadership that is dormant within us.

Start by being humble not only to others but also to yourself. Remember, the greatest amongst you must be the smallest; he who wants to be served must be ready to serve. Be humble in you words and actions. Seek for knowledge and solutions from those under you. Never think you know all. The quest for more and more knowledge will strengthen you in the face of weaknesses. If you truly want to learn from others, you must be humble to and receptive of their opinions. Receptiveness to others is a vital factor in any leadership setting. When you learn from and accept others, they will also be willing to learn from, be open to and receptive of you. Thus you can easily gain control over them.

Never pretend to be like others. I am not you and you will never be me. If you think you can be like Martin Luther, take him as your reference. Do not try imitating him. Many roads lead to leadership. You can be vibrant or quiet, violent or peaceful, with lots of great leadership skills.

Have a dream and lead yourself to success in achieving that dream. Develop the power of positive thinking. Put it in mind that you will never fail. If you think you cannot lead your own self to greater heights, do you think you can carry others to that altitude? Do not only have a dream, but dream of something thrilling and more that your actual position. If you are a personnel manager, think of becoming a general manager. Take note of every bit of thing that can help you realize your dream.

Live by principles and keep to these principles. Have a reputation to protect. A bad repute may determine your capability of leading others.

Be appreciative of and love your employment. Nevertheless, always seek for a better forum where you can be of greater service. If you have no job satisfaction, how do you think you can lead others in that field? When you become passionate with your employment, others and especially those you lead, also become passionate with you. Your presence will be a motivation to them. You become a leader to them without you knowing it.

Make use of a counselor or a mentor. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. Exploit the opportunities you observe from you mentor and use them to correct your weaknesses. Make use of studies on the lives and works of great leaders that you admire. You can copy some of them.

Give yourself to the service of others. The more you are of service to others; the more others will be of service to you.

Be realistic. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Bring it to your knowledge that this will not be done in a day. It will be impossible to achieve all these, but nevertheless, you must keep on trying.
