What Makes a Blog Effective?

Christina Pomoni
Blogging is one of the best Web-based project management tools. Whether you are using your blog to promote your products or services or for personal use, it can provide your followers with a concise synopsis of your business or views on particular topics. Especially, if your blog is used as a key marketing tool, you can keep your customers informed with potential entrepreneurial moves you are planning to make in order to expand your operations and increase the profitability of your business.

To achieve maximum visibility and drive more traffic to your blog - regardless if you are commenting on art, or posting your company's latest developments - you have to ensure that your blog meets certain requirements. Your goal is to make your blog effective, which means to create and develop a blog that can achieve mainstream popularity in the long-run.

a) Pleasant appearance

Your blog needs to be artistically satisfying. You may be the best blogger on the Web using the right content, but if the design of your blog is not attractive or doesn't match your content, your followers are very likely to be disappointed, or even worse, you won't have any followers. Appearance is definitely important as it is the first thing people notice before starting reading and evaluating your content.

b) Unique content

If you are an experienced blogger, you are probably aware that having a blog that is rich in quality content is important. In the context of search engine optimization (SEO) opting for the proper keywords to drive traffic to your blog allows you to develop a really successful pool that can attract more followers. With the selection of good keywords or keyword phrases, you create quality content, raising your blog's visibility in the major search engines. This means that when users search for these particular keywords or keyword phrases, your blog will rank higher in search engines and attract more followers than other blogs with similar content. Besides, the longer your blog remains indexed in the search engines, the more valued is considered.

c) Visual content

"A picture is worth a thousand words." Blogs that are rich in visual content work better than blogs that are rich in textual content. Even if the design of your blog is attractive and you post quality content using the right SEO keywords, your followers need to see pictures, videos or even both to remain loyal to your blog. Sometimes reading is tiring - especially from a PC screen - and visual content helps explaining what you are talking about, but most importantly it keeps your followers to your blog.

d) Frequent posting

There are bloggers or business owners who create a blog with enthusiasm, start posting in the first few weeks or months and then post randomly. Blogging regularly is critical because if you have acquired followers who have subscribed to your blog, it means that your postings have raised a particular interest to some people and these people are waiting for your next post. If it takes you 3 months to post your next blog, it is very likely that your followers will find a more dedicated blogger to follow. Especially, if your blog is used for marketing purposes, you might start losing customers. Even if you don't have a business development to announce, go to your blog and welcome your customers, greet them, show you are present. Make your blog your voice and find a voice that can attract more followers on a regular basis, provided you blog regularly.

e) Proof read

An effective blog should be prod-read by all means. If you have grammatical mistakes, misspellings, or wrong use of words and idioms, readers will be put off by your writing and are less likely to follow your blog in the future.

In conclusion, an effective blog should have a pleasant layout, be well-written and use quality content. However, even if you apply these simple rules there is no guarantee that first-time visitors will turn into regular followers of your blog. You cannot meet the needs and wants of any reader on the Web, but at least make sure you provide highly quality material embellished with relevant visual content that can attract more regular visitors to your blog.
