What Makes a Dog Man's Best Friend?

Milou, Snoopy, Beethoven, Lassie, Pluto, sound Familiar? These are only some of the big and small screen pups that we came to love over the years. But how about your own Fido? What truly makes a dog man's best friend?

For centuries dogs have been part of our lives, sometimes as pets and other times used for labour. In the Middle Ages for instance, pooches made great models as they posed for portraits. Hounds accompanied men into battle and for recreation participated in famous hunts. Other canines pulled sleds and therefore facilitated transport.

In our day and age, they guide the blind and help policemen by sniffing out illegal substances. They also serve as sidekicks and compliment celebrities' styles.

Dogs seem to be born with a sense of loyalty. They are devoted to their owners, easy to train and act as our protectors. Some dogs have been reported to go as far as sacrificing their lives for ours. Without hesitation they would gladly step in front of a bear in your place. The same can't be said about a cat that would run for safety in a heartbeat and leave you stranded.

Dogs are cheerful and goofy and in turn make great comedians. They keep us active since they require constant walking. While you can value your fish, they will never attempt to jump into your arms and display their gratitude as dogs often do.

They also bring joy into our households. Children around the world would prefer a puppy to any other gift and elders often find bliss in their companionship.

For the courage and devotion that they display, for the many jobs that they successfully perform and for the way they constantly fill our lives with happiness, dogs everywhere deserve their title.
