Recently I received a note indicating a person to some degree took offense to the label of food addict when used in reference to someone with diabetes, even if it was used in reference to ones self.
Sure it indicates the inability of a person to stop a particular activity because they find it so compelling that their body craves the magic elixir just to carry on. Because food is a requirement of life, making it impossible to go Cold Turkey and just quit, how can it be labeled an addiction?
Well, my friend, when I can not walk past an open box of donuts without taking one there is a problem. When after everyone else has had the opportunity to take one, and by some chance there are some left, I can't keep myself from returning for a second, or even a third. Guess what folks, this is an addiction.
When I go to the supermarket, sure I raid the produce section. But that box of raspberry Twinkies all covered in coconut whisper their love song in my ear as I pass the baked goods on the way to the checkout.
Yesterday was payday, I knew what to expect in advance. As is tradition, my employer supplies fresh donuts on payday Friday as a token of appreciation for his employees. I'm not talking the standard cheap box of powdered sugar dunker's you get at the convenience store, but top of the line local small mom and pop bakery goods that melt in your mouth.
Taking this into consideration, and knowing I must have one, I held back on my standard breakfast by about half. Returning after my morning bus route, I picked up my paycheck and secured a modest sized cinnamon bun. Then I left the building and went home...
Yes you must treat yourself now and then, but then it's time to get away from temptation.
I can proudly state that when I returned for my afternoon bus route I walked right past that still half full box of donuts and finished out the day at 1788 calories.
For those of you following The Diabetic Food Addict, my morning B/G for yesterday was 91, confirming my new method of meal management is working well.
