What Makes the Pug Special

Rielle
What makes the Pug so desirable and popular as a pet is it's overly wrinkled face and short stubby legs. The Pug breed goes all the way back to 400 BC when the Chinese Dynasty used them as temple guards. They have since been companions to many in many walks of life. They are very adaptable to different lifestyles. If you are a couch potato, they will be happy sitting with you. If you surf, sky dive, rock climb or lead a very active life, they will be right by your side and happy too. Although you may have to carry your little pal during strenuous activities! These cute, wrinkled bundles can be laid back or energetic. Pugs are generally happy, easy to please and get along with. The pug is a fun dog, despite it's serious look, that can be pretty stubborn, is very adaptable and good for families or people of all ages.

Pugs must have a Cesarean section to give birth so unless you plan to breed, you will need to spay or neuter quickly. They cannot give birth naturally. The Pug has a short flat face full of wrinkles and big, bulging eyes. They have difficult breathing and some breathing problems due to the face shape and structure. The Pug will weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. They come in many different colors such as fawn, black, apricot and silver and are a snap to groom although they do shed quite heavily. General health is overall good aside from pregnancy, breathing issues and infections starting in the wrinkles. Most of which can easily be prevented. Wrinkles need to be kept as clean and dry as possible to prevent infections. Strangely the Pug can quite easily lose an eye! Their eyes will actually pop out! You must be very careful when walking on a leash or putting any pressure on the neck and head area as they can and will pop an eye right out. If this happens the eye must be put back in place immediately
