What Makes Wizard 101 the Perfect Family Game

Marilyn Quinn
Out of a family of six, five members of ours plays Wizard 101 with some regularity. Many features have been implemented by Kings Isle that make this an all around perfect fame for families to play together or separately. We all enjoy the game even when we are playing alone.

We opted for family pricing because of the number of accounts we have. Discounts for additional family member memberships make it an affordable game for us all to play. We have automatic payments set up so that we don't ever have to worry about when we need to renew.

The easy online interface of Wizard 101 allows me to set different levels of security and access for each of the children and for myself and my husband. The regular chat allows my younger children to use pre-selected phrases so there is no danger of them entering in personal information or accidentally giving out more details than we want them to. Our older daughter has the ability to text chat without having open chat. Certain words and numbers are not allowed. So she can talk to others more freely but still is restricted as to what she is allowed to say and what she is allowed to read. She can't see what the over 18 chatters are saying if it is not allowed. My husband and I have open chat and can talk freely with other adults. The chat bubbles also allow us to see when younger children are trying to friend us; we simply say no to avoid any inappropriate interaction and then we don't have to play with the more immature players.

The friends on Wizard 101 list allows us to friend family members and find them in the game to help each other with quests and battles. Along with a friends list, we can ignore certain people if they are annoying or inappropriate in the game also. It makes it very easy to help our children stay away from anyone we don't want them to associate with in game.

While we have seen some people try to get around the censors by typing in innocuous words in combinations that could have other meanings, the administrators of the game have also implemented a reporting system that allows us to turn in people who are trying to make the game unsafe or unpleasant for others. Admittedly, some can also abuse the reporting system; but Kings Isle monitors exchanges between players and stays on top of what is really going on.

The content in Wizard 101 is really what keeps us coming back for more. There is enough variation in game play to appeal to all ages. Our younger children can easily advance and battle with little or no help from us and there is a great story line with references that adults can grab ahold of too. The more advanced boss battles offer great challenges and PVP also gives us additional ways to enjoy Wizard 101 that our younger children don't necessarily partake in.
