I own a very cute and lucky yorkie who's name is coolie. I named him after Chris Cooley of the Washington Redskins, only I spell my little coolie's name differently. Yorkies are in my opinion great dogs and are wonderful to own as a pet. They're very loyal, loving, and energetic. They make a great companion whether you live alone or have a family because they're loyal to their owners and great with kids. They are also suited for any type of environment whether you live in a house or apartment because they'll pass most standard pet policies for apartments weighing in at a max of 7 pounds, and they don't need an abundance of space to run around since they're so tiny. They can get enough exercise just running around in your apartment.
Depending upon the coat style that you choose for your yorkie, they can be very low maintenance. I keep my coolie in mid length puppy cut all year round so he's pretty easy to take care of. I just make sure to bathe him at least once a week and brush his hair every few days.
The one thing that I love about yorkies, especially my coolie is that they love to snuggle and just be with you. I can barely walk around the house without tripping over coolie because he's become really attached to me in the two years that we've been together! Sometimes I have to admit that that part of it can get a little annoying at times, but he's still my little baby, and I can't help but to understand that he's just very clingy.
Also, believe it or not, yorkies are good guard dogs. Not many people or things can come too close to my house, car, and bedroom door with coolie around. The minute that a yorkie senses something they don't like or just someone in general that they're not used to they start barking. That's a good trait for a dog to have regardless of its size or temperament.
All in all, I have no complaints when it comes to my yorkie. I love him to death and really enjoy spending time with him. His small size allows me to spend more time with him than the average dog owner because since he can literally fit into my purse, I take him pretty much everywhere. He rides with me in my car, we shop together, I can take him to see family and friends with no problem, and when he was younger before he got into the habit of barking at people I even took him with me to the movies as my date! He's wonderful and I wouldn't trade him for the world. And I know that anyone else who owns a yorkie will probably agree with me 110%.
