Fatigue and being tired does contribute to the problem. It's not the sole cause of it all, but it is part of it. If you are getting little rest as in six hours a night or less, dealing with these dark circles and getting them to go away will be close to impossible. Getting more rest can help. This rest can be broken up through the day if your schedule doesn't give you enough time for a good night's rest.
Heredity is part of the problem as well. If your parents or family tends to have this issue, it's likely to be a cause of it in you. There are treatments but know that heredity is part of the problem.
Some people have the bad habit of constantly rubbing their eyes. This could be because of a dry eye problem, allergies, or something else. When rubbing the eyes, the skin around it can tend to get darker and even sag. Try to break this habit. You might have to treat an eye issue so that you aren't tempted to rub them as often.
Allergies can cause your eyes to look puffy. You could be allergic to something indoors or outdoors and not know it. Find out what your allergy is so that you can treat it. In many people with a real allergy, this step alone can help reduce the dark circle problem.
Poor nutrition can be a problem. The skin starts to look older and loses it's color when the body is not getting proper nutrients. Keep a diet higher in quality foods for maximum skin health.
Try to protect this part of your face from the sun. The sun can make your face look uneven as the tone of various parts of your face might darken at different rates. In some people, the eyes look dark while the rest of the face does not.
