What is Marmite? Look and Taste
Marmite is a sticky thick brown spread containing a slightly bitter savory taste, and is often used on crackers or cheese sandwiches.
What is Marmite? Where Does it Come From?
Marmite is not to be confused with Australia's Vegemite; they are two totally different food items with different tastes. Speaking strictly of Marmite though there are two different kinds to be aware of; the original recipe available in the UK was made by Unilever Bestfoods UK and the other is made by Sanitarium Health Food Company in New Zealand.
I personally have only ever tried the first kind of Marmite; I am not making any sort of testament as to which is better, it is just the only kind of Marmite I know and I happen to love it.
What is Marmite? Ingredients and Nutritional Components
Marmite is a yeast extract, again, with a kind of bitter and salty taste. According to the official Marmite site
the raw ingredients are made from "brewer's yeast that's been used to ferment sugars into alcohol."
** Note: The official ingredients are as listed below but keep in mind that two different companies make Marmite and the ingredients and taste differ a bit according to the company and region in the world in which it is produced.
Ingredients:
Yeast extract
Salt
Vegetable extract
Niacin
Folic Acid
Vitamins B1, B2, B12
What is Marmite? How Should it Be Eaten?
I typically make Marmite cheese sandwiches or spread it on crackers, but I have heard of some who combine it with cream cheese (which sounds lovely to me) and some who even put a bit in a mug of hot water and drink it (that is one I'm going to have to try next).
What is Marmite? How Should it Be Stored?
Marmite should not be refrigerated, just tuck it away in your pantry or in one of your kitchen cabinets and it will last you months without going bad.
What is Marmite? Conclusion
Marmite is a salty, slightly bitter, brown sandwich spread made of yeast extract and rich in B vitamins; it works great spread on a cracker or on a cheese sandwich, and can even be turned into a tea. Marmite is a quick and easy condiment rich in B vitamins for an early morning or afternoon energy boost.
