What is the Meaning of the Holidays for Me Today?

A New Perspective on Maria's Legacy

In recent years the meaning of the holidays has been very personal for me, Ask someone,"What does Christmas mean?" They will almost always answer "The meaning of Christmas is..." tagging one of the generic explanations. With persistence in getting them to dig deeper, you most likely will see their faces glow the brightest of personal warmth you will ever witness. For the past years, I have written about Maria's Legacy. Last year I added a video posted on YouTube.com and Blip.tv dedicated to her explaining her ideals. As life always seems to give us it's little twists and turns, this year the legacy took on a new perspective for me.

The theme of Maria's Legacy
Maria was a proud woman who took the meaning of the holidays to a different light. You and I tend to think of the meaning of the holidays as a season of giving. This ideal goes beyond the meaning of Christmas right through to other holidays such as Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Kwanzaa. For many this conjures a picture of those doing well or at least better off extending a hand to the less fortunate. Maria falling into the latter lived the meaning of "Even when you have nothing or little you still have something to give". This credo I named Maria's Legacy.

My new perspective
This year's life twist derailed me off the path to prosperity spiraling down the trail of the have-nots. Unlike my late friend Maria in the past even when I had little, I had more than many. Now, I have the privilege to Maria Legacy closer to how this special woman would. Now much as she, I have very little materially or monetarily, yett like Maria I will find something within me I can give.

What will I find?
I don't have that answer in full. I know I will find a way to volunteer at Thanksgiving and Christmas at the soup kitchen. I know I will find that not so extra dollar to donate to the food banks. I also know, I will find a way to look past my problems and bring a smile to as many faces as I can. Maybe you and I can share the meaning of the holidays, the meaning of Christmas and happiness in life. In doing together we will bring a deeper meaning to Maria's Legacy in honor of Maria's memory.
