Dreams are messages that your subconscious mind sends to you while you sleep. They contain symbols with specific meanings. Learning to decipher your dreams can help you connect to your subconscious and the messages it is attempting to send to you.

In this article, I am going to provide an interpretation of what it means to dream of abandonment. Abandonment is a common dream symbol, because it is connected to deep human emotions that nearly everyone experiences at some point in their lives. Interpretations will differ from person to person, you are the only one who can truly unlock the secrets of your subconscious.

To dream of abandonment could mean many things in the context of a dream. The most common cause of abandonment in dreams is the loss of a loved one. It may be caused by the literal loss of a loved one through death, a break-up, or rejection. It could also be caused by less literal abandonment, a significant person in your life no longer has time for you or has been generally absent with work, school, friends, or other obligations.

Sometimes feelings of abandonment in dreams stem from issues of the past. If your parents left you, died, or were unavailable throughout your childhood, abandonment could be a lifelong theme in your dreams.

If you have never experienced abandonment, it could be that you simply fear it. The subconscious is very keen at picking out our fears. If you dream of loved ones leaving you or of losing things that you love, perhaps you have feelings of insecurity that need to be dealt with.

Alternately, to dream that you are abandoning a person or situation indicates that you feel incapable of handling it. It does not necessarily mean that you should or would abandon the person or situation, it is simply a way for your subconscious to tell you that the issues you are trying to tackle may be too big for you. A dream of abandoning your loved ones does not necessarily mean you desire abandoning them, but rather that you cannot handle the stresses on your own and you may need to look elsewhere for comfort and support.
