What it Means to Be an Eclectic Witch

Wendy Cheuvront
My life has changed dramatically since I've started studying Paganism and have been a practicing eclectic witch. I don't have many of the insecurities I once did. I feel I am a much better person than I was. I am no longer afraid of death. There has been so many positive changes in my life.

Being eclectic means that you don't follow any one particular path with all it's beliefs and rules. Instead, you learn about a wide variety of beliefs that interest you, and you use what feels "right" to you. Your spiritual growth never ends, because you are constantly open to new things. Each thing that you take in, to be part of your own spirituality, changes you a little bit.

I feel that I am the best person I can be at this point in my life, because of the spiritual fulfillment and growth I have attained. Usually, I don't stop long enough to study any one thing in particular, as there are so many interesting things to learn about. Sometimes I take a lot from what I have learned. Sometimes I take a little, or even nothing. There is nothing to keep me from experiencing all that I want to. There is no right or wrong way to practice being an eclectic witch.

If I feel like studying Shamanism or Buddhism, I do. If I feel like working on my chakras, I do that. Much of the time, I take a break from studying anything at all and just put into practice and power the things I already know and believe.

If I want to attain knowledge on something I'd like to use, I start learning on that subject. Say for instance, I want to incorporate gemstones or crystals into my meditation or magic work, I can study them, as a whole or individually if I have a specific want or need that I want to bring about. There is just so much out there to learn and to experience for me to be tied down to one particular belief system.

I can't imagine ever leaving this path in this lifetime for anything less fulfilling. I feel I can achieve all that I want in my life, both physically and spiritually, by continuing to learn and grow. Being an eclectic witch, to me, means that you never tire of your spirituality, and you never stop learning and growing.

I really enjoyed this article-- I myself am an eclectic witch and I'd sum up my spiritual life in pretty much the same way. Thanks for writing this!
