What it Means to Be EMO
What Do Teens Mean when They Say They Are Emo?
Emo kids will tell you what they are feeling, they are mostly sensitive, shy, broken-hearted, glum, introverted, quiet and easily upset. They write about these feelings in dark, depressing and often times long-winded poems.
Emo kids are very likely to harm themselves or inflict self injuries. Most of the time they do what is referred to as 'Cutting'. They will often times burn themselves with cigarettes and hide the injuries from their parents but share what they have done with other emo kids that are doing the same thing.
Their fashion will sometimes include tight T-shirts which often have the names of rock bands on them, tight jeans with studded belts and belt buckles, black shoes, black wire rimmed glasses, long bangs which are brushed to one side of the face and/or dyed black hair. Emo kids don't care what people think but they want other people's sympathy, therefore they will tell their friends how upset they are and show their friends how they have been mutilating themselves. They crave attention and cry at the drop of the hat. They are often times sullen or in bad moods and try to make authority figures mad. They may dress in a way that gets them the attention they want and need and they may write poetry that has dark, suicidal undertones. Emo kids may hang out at coffee houses, music stores and artistic venues. Most emo kids see the world as being a beautiful place but having inhabitants (meaning other humans) that are lost, depressing and hateful.
Some kids however, try to be emo because they thinks it's cool and want to be with the 'in' crowd. These kids are called "Posers" and emo kids know who they are and don't like them. These posers may go so far as to draw fake "scars" on their wrists to fit in with the emo kids and try to act depressed and suicidal. Fake emo kids will likely buy dark clothing from expensive stores and try to make it look like it was bought in the thrift stores.
Emo kids don't always listen to punk rock, they don't care what others think and they will listen to anything they like, anything they deem as being artistic. Relationships mean alot to the emo kid and they will tell you that. Whether it be relationships with family, friends or girlfriends/boyfriends, they take them very seriously. Which is why when they are dumped or hurt by someone they are so emotional and write about it in their poetry.

The more points you have the more emo you are the site says. The first question is, "Do you cry?" Because crying is a big part of being emo or emotional.
These kids see nothing wrong with the cutting, or other self injuries. They say it's a way to make themselves feel better in a world where "Life is Pain" and "Pain leads to Happiness". Parents need to take a look at their teens behavior and act accordingly. If your teen is acting emo, maybe you should delve a little deeper into their lives and make sure their behavior isn't dangerous to themselves or to others.

Everybody has that intention that Emo's cut themselves, but selfdamaging is called massochachism(or something like that.)
Also, Emo's are people who are depressed often if they have had a bad life.
i hate life on the hole it sucks. i wish i could die i ed up of this life there nothing for me in this planet called earth i alwasy heart broken neve find a peice of mind always sad and never associating with other people mostly like to be bymyself ahhh y wont i jus die. and i hate when people criticised me they dont even know me or what i am going through they alwasy call me gay of how the way i dress u guys need a life people jus leave me alone
you are completely misrepresenting us "emo" kids, hahah. it sounded like you asked the word "emo" is really controversial. dont say a kid cuts because of how they dress or the music they listen to or things they write/draw. they are only expressing how they feel or situations they're in. some kids whom people call "emo", call it a fashion statement, or music (it can be anything from hardcore to alternative to indie or anything) some people use it as a word for a general feeling of sadness or despair. and others use it to stereotype people. you really do have it all wrong. you also sound quite prejudiced. either that or your seeking drama and attention and like pissing people off.

I've seen this so many times at our school. The emo kids cut themselves, and deny that it has anything to do with emo.
Take a look at emodanger.co.cc. That person has emo down to a science. We see it every day!
People shouln't listen to this article. Emo is music. The fashion is Emo/Scene. That's IT. Emo has been associated with depression and suicide, but even though some people do it, it doesnt mean they are Emo. Being Emo isn't about cutting, its about being an indivisual. Lots of Emos don't cut. And if you cut, your not Emo. You are just depressed. And if you think that all Emos do are cry and cut themselves, you have it ALL WRONG. Emo is music. I don't know how Emo got associated with self harm in the first place. Emo doesn't mean EMOTIONAL, it means EMOTIVE HARDCORE. Everyone is emotional, so are we all Emo? And maybe some Emos cut, but tht doesnt mean we all do. I have never cut. And people who are trying to be Emo, or who are jumping to conclusions, at least read the true meaning of it and not just believing the stereotype. And "Emos" who think it is all about cutting and nothing else, you are just posers. So don't think all Emos hate life and want to die, because they don't.
Misinformation such as this is what causes mass panics and unnecessary fear among parents. Dressing a certain way is not always a cause for alarm. Of course there are exceptions such as gang colors and wearing revealing clothing at socially inappropriate times. This is one point I want to abundantly clear. There are people who are happy who prefer dark colored clothing over the brighter tones. Clothing is not the BEST way of determining what is going on through a person's mind.
Also I feel the attention bit is off. If someone craved attention that badly I doubt sobbing hysterically and staying to one's self would be the best way to get it. It's more likely a kid would start acting out, being more violent and hanging around the wrong crowds. Depressing behavior will not get you friends and not much attention besides whispered comments on how odd that individual is.

Im one of the emo kids & I just want to share it to oll of u that we,emos have different and we have many heavy problems in our lives.I have problem about my family,friends and luv.We need friends to understand us and we need attention of a true friend and we need enough love from our parents and friends.And now im cutting or using blades to cut my arms and i wrote "I Do This 4 U" on my arm.But after that day My teacher saw it and he asked me"Whats that?"then I said "oh nothing sir" And he explained it to me and he said that its not the only way of how 2 lessen my problems in life and then he still asked me "Do u have friends or classmates whose doing these kind of hahaha..."laslas".Hahaha ayoko nah im a filipina and Please dont be afraid of me because im a good person in real life.TeNX.
