What Are the Merits of a July 4th Wedding Date?

NOM
I attended a wedding on the 4th of July once and at first thought it was a dumb idea. However, there were many perks and a few downsides to a 4th of July wedding date. What are the upsides and downsides to a July 4th wedding date?

First the perks:

Everyone already has the day off, so at least everyone should be able to get to your wedding.

You could choose to serve simpler food and not look out of keeping with the day. If you are on a limited budget or you are just a more informal person, this allows for more of a barbecue of better foods like ribs and steak which might feel more like your personality than filet mignon and green bean almandine.

There will be firework displays, so if you can get a venue with a view of your local display, such as near the beach or the water, you have automatic awesome entertainment.

Your wedding colors are easy. The bride is white, the flowers can be red or blue - such as red roses or blue bells, and decoration is a snap. You do not need to be very patriotic; more of a summer picnic theme will work as well.

Many civic halls are actually much more available and you may be able to negotiate a cheaper rate. Caterers and hotel reception sites likely are not booked either. You can likely get some deals here and there, maybe even a weekday rate.

Wedding favors of sparklers or similar themed items are easy and fun to find.

Mixing up great festive drinks, foods, and variants on standards will likely be something a caterer will find interesting to do and will be excited about.

The down side of a Fourth of July wedding:

People may really prefer to just be wearing flip flops and eating a hamburger that day instead of high heels or ties.

People may tend to drink excessively as they would for the holiday.

People may begrudge missing other plans.

If picnic or red white and blue themes are not your thing, it seems like you just picked a weird day for your wedding.

Parking may be impossible near your venue. Find out in advance.

Some preferred vendors - especially smaller businesses like bakeries, limousines or the band - may not be available on holidays.

It is really, really hot outside.

Some people may feel you are making a political comment when you are not.

If you do not get a venue near fireworks so that you can see them, then you just hear them all through your wedding, which is not romantic or festive.

  • Keep your wedding colors to red, white, or blue to not clash with other public decorations.
  • A venue with a view of fireworks makes for great wedding entertainment
Reception venues may be more available on the 4th of July which means you might have more choices or a better venue might be available at a cheaper rate.

Wow, so great to see so many others getting married on the 4th! We are as well. We met on this day so we thought it would be nice and plus, he can never forget our anniversary:) We won't be doing the 4th theme.. We are using this date for personal reasons and honestly, if people aren't happy that's their problem, it will be the best day of our lives regardless:)

This article SUCKS! I am planning a 4th of July wedding, and everyone is just as excited about it as we are! Ours is going to be a casual wedding in our backyard with the perfect view of the town fireworks. The only downside I have come across was reading this article. Forget you read it! Go for it girls, and CONGRATULATIONS to us all, Amen.

I'm gettting married on the 4th of July 2009 and we are having a blast with it. My bridesmaids are wearing cobalt blue halter dresses, I'm in a white halter wedding dress and the groomsmen are wearing black jeans, cobalt blue shirts. Groom is wearing a white shirt with a cobalt blue tie. We are getting married in a garden so all of the flowers are natural, however we have our flourist doing red, white, blue mix to accent... our tables are white linen with a red or blue sparkle square with a burst of fireworks glued to a mirror on top.. We will also have a huge fireworks display that is put on every year by the town we are getting married in... our cake will be mostly white, with some red & blue flowers... I think a patriotic wedding is great and so far, everyone that know's about it is excited too...

you might want to reconsider. the above article has some good points. i've been to one 4th wedding before and it was horrible. not only was it too hot, but i had to give up many other plans to be there. and instead of being classy and elegant it was cheesey--red, white and blue is not an elegant look for a wedding.

we are planning a july 4, 2009 wedding. we are using a blue and silver theme with hints of red. My dress is white and blue (light) and the blues will match with the guys and bridemaids. We are going to do a basic star theme without going too far overboard with the red, white and blue theme. We are going to do an outdoor wedding/reception (weather permitting) and going to have a firewords display afterwards. I am going to look into where they set off our fireworks to see if we are able to block off a part for the wedding guests/party. We are going to have a semi-casual reception with a bbq themed reception. we will have candles and either bbq or/and hot sauce favors.

Have your son reconsider the date. It is the dumbest idea, not to mention that it's a terrible omen to get married on "Independance day".

My son and daughter-in-law "to be" are planning a 4th of July wedding for 2008!! They have stayed away from red, white and blue completely; brown and pink are their colors...brown clothing, pink shasta daisies. We're finding that people are LOVING the idea, and because the 4th is on a Friday this year, folks are attending the wedding and leaving the next day for other vacation plans. Sending out "Save the Date" cards EARLY was key, I think. Most of the family members and friends put in for that week off for vacation because they knew about it last January. We have more coming than we really expected. The only July 4th theme used was in the form of "save the date" notes, which I did on the computer in red, white and blue and "took liberty" (no pun intended) with the words from the Declaration of Independence (ie: "we the parents" of (name of bride and groom) ... "in order to form a more perfect 'union'", etc. These notes went to only those close family members and friends who we

we are thinking of getting married July 4, 2009 as well. But we are torn - b/c of the positives (unique, memorable, and fun) and the possible negatives (will people not want to change their normal 4th plans).......

We are thinking of a venue with a great view of big city fireworks.............bridesmaid dresses that are blue and white.............and sparklers for favors.

    Any more thoughts?
