What Michael Jackson's Death Taught Me

Death of an Icon

Linda Cole
I am not now, nor have I ever been a fan of Michael Jackson or his music. Of course I knew who he was. I grew up with his music spilling out of the radio. To me, he was just another singing voice mixed in with all the others. My preference has always been more in tune with other musicians that fit my musical philosophy. However, Michael Jackson's death has caused this non fan to reflect on a man who has given millions of people worldwide great joy through his music.

I watched as young men and women auditioned to be one of ten dancers who would perform with Michael on stage during his world tour. Excitement written on each face as their name was called out. Their dream died with him. A chance of a lifetime to perform with an exceptional entertainer they all admired. My heart goes out to them.

Michael Jackson's death has left three young children without a father. They are now caught up in a custody battle that could be brewing. Will what's best for them be considered by everyone? Especially those who might initiate a custody battle only for possible riches that could come with legal guardianship. Children who need to remain in the safe, comfortable and familiar surroundings of the ones who have been in their lives and who have loved them because of who they are as individuals. Not because of who their father was or how much money was left to them.

As I watched the media swarm a car carrying Michael's mother, my thought was where is the respect for a family dealing with the death of a family member. Of course Michael Jackson's death would be breaking news around the world, but to his mom, he was her little boy. A mother who now has to bury one of her children. It's been said many times, no parent should have to bury a child. Yet, it happens all the time. It's never easy when it's your own and it's harder if your child is as famous as Michael Jackson.

I watched as fans came together at Never Land Ranch and around the world to show their respect and love for a musical talent know as "The King of Pop". A title that he earned through years of sweat and love for what he did well.

Michael Jackson's death ends a life filled with controversy and allegations that don't need to be rehashed here. There are plenty of critics who will do that in due time. I'm neither a critic nor a fan. Just someone who has taken time to reflect the passing of a man. What his life and his music meant to those who truly loved him. Even though I'm not a fan, it doesn't mean I'm not aware of his talent and worldwide appeal as a musician.

In time, we will all follow in the footsteps that have gone before us as we begin our own journey to meet our maker. What Michael Jackson's death taught me is what we all know. Life is short and there's not one perfect person in this world. We are who we are and one life does affect others.

I was never a fan of his. However, I think he got a bum rap for those child molestation rumors.

I do like his old music, but other than that I agree with everything that you said. When I see the media swarming his family I also think "let them grieve and leave them alone". Nice job here.

Very well said, Linda! People have to remember that he was first a son and brother. We knew him only through his music, thus his music is what will be missed by most people. I was a fan through the 1980's, but I could never get into his newer stuff.

Nicely done Linda. You are right on. I also was not a fan as I'm way over his fan base age group! I liked a few of his songs and I thought he was a cute little kid in the beginning. Anyway, job on this!
