You may know that those with bipolar can suffer with extreme lows of severe depression then swing way up to high levels of mania, but there are other moods typical of certain types of bipolar disorder, such as a mixed state. What is a mixed state in bipolar disorder?
Manic episodes in bipolar disorder are extremely high moods. The person is extremely happy or agitated, doesn't need to sleep a lot and may engage in risk-taking behavior. There is also a slightly lower mood called hypomania, where the person may just seem talkative and sociable all of the time. Manic states are not always happiness, but other highly energized states such as anger as well.
he depressed state is usually extreme sadness for no apparent reason. Although sadness is the most common emotion felt during a low state, other lower level emotions can take place such as losing interest in activities, being worried and feeling slow.
A mixed state in bipolar disorder is feeling a combination of high level and low level moods at the same time. For example, a person may feel restless, think about suicide and have feelings of hopelessness while at the same time feeling energized. This can be a dangerous state if suicide is contemplated as those in a mixed state may feel more compelled to act in some way to change their situation.
Not everyone with bipolar disorder experiences mixed states. Not all mixed states are severe. The difficulty in treating a mixed state would be that antidepressants could swing the mood toward mania, while some mood stabilizers could bring the person down too low into a state of severe depression. It is good to talk with your doctor or a counselor while experiencing a mixed state to learn behavioral management skills during these times.
Those with bipolar are most known for experiencing periods of extreme highs and lows. But many also experience a combination of symptoms in a mixed state which must be carefully monitored by a physician.
