One of my favorite things to do is eat candy, especially chocolate. I have a sugar addiction and holidays are my favorite because candy is normally involved. The US people spend the most money on candy at Halloween and a close second is Easter. So I have been thinking about Easter and in one of my sugar moments I started to ponder what the most popular Easter candy would be?
Chocolate as no surprise is the most popular candy in the US and the most non-chocolate popular Easter candy is the cute little Peep, specifically the yellow Peep. If you are not a fan of yellow, Peeps also come in pink, lavender, blue and white. Lucky for Peep lovers the little marshmallow treat is only 32 calories with 0 grams of fat, you could realistically eat a whole box of Peeps and not go over your calorie intake, I was especially excited about this information as I normally cannot stop at just one candy.
Wondering how many Peeps I ate last year? 600 million Peeps! No, I am just kidding but we Americans did eat 600 million Peeps the last Easter season, obviously we Americans love our Peeps!
What I find most interesting about Peeps, or maybe I should restate that and say what I find most interesting about my family members who eat Peeps is the fact they like this popular Easter candy stale! Yes, it is true. My Mom is a big stale Peep fan, she will not eat Peeps freshly out of the package, she says they do not taste good fresh so she opens up that package and lets them sit out for a few days until they get a little crispy. Personally, I think they taste gross stale and I like my Peeps fresh out of the package but to each his/her own, I say.
Wondering how long it takes to make a Peep? The answer is 6 minutes but if we were in the 1950's, it would take 27 hours! I am so glad we are not in the 1950's because I do not think that I could wait that long for a Peep!
If you get the urge to want to make recipes using Peeps such as Peepsicles or want to make some really cute Easter crafts such as a Flowerpot Topiary, make sure to go to the official Peep website, www.marshmallowpeeps.com.
The website does have really cool resources, besides the recipes and crafts they also have a link to Peeps fun, Peeps facts, Peeps news and a neat factory tour that is a slideshow, you can even print the factory tour and read a little blurb about each photograph that is in the slideshow. Kids and adults both would find this site interesting.
So next time you are eating Peeps, remember that not only do they taste good, they are low in calories and they are America's most popular Easter candy!
