Nopalitos is a dish of cooked cactus that is served in Mexico at different restaurant locations, and this dish is very scarce, because cactus only grow healthy once a year. I usually don't buy Nopalitos, but instead my family cooks them at home. Nopalitos is actually a low- income food, but many people these days are liking it more and more.
The way Nopalitos are made is very easy to do, first you will need to cut the youngest and most tender cactus on the plants. Then peel the sticker waxy peeling off of the cactus pieces. Then you rinse and cook in water until fully done, and once done you need to drain all the water out of the cooking pot and let the Nopalitos cool off. Then you take some chopped onions, tomatoes, salt, and garlic to the mix. When all of this is mixed the meal is ready to be served, and the garlic will give this dish a unique tasty taste. When serving it's better or custom to serve Nopalitos with fresh cooked beans, and of course fresh cooked corn tortillas. I also like to eat my Nopalitos with plenty of Mexican Cheese. But, if you really want a really good taste to your Nopalitos you may want to add some cilantro to the mix, the cilantro releases another good flavor.
I hope you all enjoy eating Nopalitos one day in your lives, but I do have to warn you that they look very sticky when served, so if you have a weak stomach don't eat this dish. In the United States many Mexican product vendors usually sell fresh cactus in bags, so you don't have to travel to Central Mexico to get some fresh cactus. I have always liked trying different foods when I travel or go to a different style of restaurant, I just love to explore different cultures and to learn their different kinds of foods they eat. Please leave me comments on this article on how these Nopalitos tasted.
