What NOT to Wear: Fashion Mistakes

Top Fashion Don'ts and Trends NOT to Follow This Summer

Lisa Henry
Has anyone else notice that in fashion, the tops are getting lower, the heels higher, the skirts shorter and the bags and sunglasses bigger?

Here are my top picks for summer fashion trends gone wrong and looks that are just not flattering on anyone.

Oversized Sunglasses-Even though these are trendy and worn by everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Eva Longoria, they really are not flattering. Super-sized sunglasses make you look like you are a toddler wearing your mother's sunglasses. Totally wrong proportions for most faces and frankly they make most women look silly. Select a sunglass style that flatters your face shape and please do not succumb to the ridiculous practice of wearing them indoors.

Tops as Dresses-Yes, there are many current styles of dresses that can be worn both as a top or a dress. But there are also longish tops that are clearly only that-a top, and are not meant to be worn without pants, jeans, leggings or a skirt. Wearing a top that looks like a micro mini makes you look like you had a few too many cocktails while dressing and you forgot to put on your bottoms. Examples of fashion-challenged are celebs with this faux paux are found weekly on PerezHilton.com.

Slightly Cropped Pants-These are pants that come about an inch above the ankle but aren't short enough to clearly be capris or pedal pushers. Often seen on the Talbots' crowd. They are an odd length and look like you're wearing pants that shrunk slightly or are "floods." Pick a cropped pant that hits at the middle of the calf or higher, with a proportion that works for your torso length, leg length and height.

Ultra Low-Cut Tops-You've seen these tops, often longer length or tunic-style, super low cut, sometimes with an embellishment at the cleavage "V." Think of the women on the Housewives of Orange County. Ladies, unless you are Pamela Anderson or a Vegas showgirl, wear these ultra plunge necks with a cami or tank top underneath. Just because the designer made them cut down to the navel, doesn't mean that's how they are meant to be worn. Too much cleavage being exposed. And definitely not appropriate for the workplace.

Sweat Suits-There's a reason they're called "sweat" suits, so unless you're sweating or have a short walk to the gym, save this super casual look for the gym or relaxing around the house. They make you look like you just got out of bed or you're about to clean out the garage. Yes, there are some cute hoodie sets (Juicy's or Victoria's Secret) but they're still basically "sweats."

Furry Boots or Cowboy Boots with Shorts-A favorite look (i.e. fashion mistake) of Britney Spears and Misha Barton. This look really shouldn't even need an explanation--it's just plain wrong. Wrong combination of seasons, textures, and proportions. Need I say more?

yeah, I agree - it's one thing to wear a top that is long enough to be a dress, as a dress, but quite another to to wear something that barely covers your bum, slap on a pair of tights and call it a dress.
