"What Now? ..."
How Do People Continue to Provide for the Earth and to Provide for the Things that Benefit This Earth?
I feel like there's so much for me to give back. I mean, I've hardly amounted to anything and am still struggling to meet my goals when there are so many people suffering in the world that really need help! I'm not saying this to get attention or anything. I just feel like there's something that I owe the world.
What can everyone do to share with the world? What would be something cool that could get people together in a fun and peaceful way to benefit each other? What would be the simplest, most honest stuff that could be done to inspire others to realize how they are not an island.
I'm just saying, does anyone else think about this?
Like, for example, I think about runaway/abused/neglected youth that need help. I mean, that's something that tears my heart out! And man, maybe me or you had nobody help them out but these kids had NOBODY! I mean NOBODY! It's so awesome that there are some legitimate organizations out there that help these kids. I mean, NOBODY deserves to grow up without anyone or anything and with so many people using and abusing them! Man, nobody deserves to be alone. Nobody deserves to be abandoned like that. And I'm happy that I've made small contributions to charity or what not that little by little could help some of these kids find safety and refuge so that they are likelier to grow up happy/healthy.
That's just one example.
There's such a thing as codependent giving. Like giving what you can't afford and getting hurt by that. Or even problems that might come up with not researching who you're donating to. (Charity Navigator [ http://www.charitynavigator.org ] and Network For Good [ http://www1.networkforgood.org ] can help you evaluate charities that do a lot of awesome positive change!)
I mean, with everything I've gone through I feel really lucky. (That's an insult to myself by the way.) All I'm saying is that I have to do something that matters.
There has to be something so important.
I don't know. Mostly I'm just trying to get a dialogue going.
What do you all think? Is there any cause that you've contributed to where you're so happy about the difference that you made? How can people get together and talk or listen about real-world applications that can help people in a practical and down-to-earth way? What are some ways to keep the trajectory of the world on track with the things that are going right that may, hopefully, not even be dependent on time or money?
It's just really picking at my brain, because I need to live in a society that I can be proud of. And call me selfish but I'm still going to push for a world that is as much worth living in as now or maybe even better than the world now. And if any one or two or 100 people are still going to push to be so vain, I'll still push for a society worth living in!
I'm not saying, "Everything sucks. The sky is falling." I'm talking about how everyone is a part of the world and when you get caught up in your ego it hurts the world. The simple, practical non-monetary contributions to the world matter. And it's like the dialogue in part of the movie, "Before Sunset": Sometimes making lofty goals while ignoring the little things can cause just as much division. Sometimes it's much more important that you said "please" or "thankyou" or stood up for somebody... rather than planning to entirely stop global-warming or some retarded goal like that that's too big to focus all of your time and energy in the world on.
And that's how and why I refuse to be an island. So, talk to me. What do you think? (I'm not criticizing anyone by the way. If I'm criticizing anyone, it's me [because I feel guilty for not putting out more of myself that the world deserves to see]. I just want an exchange of talking/listening about what's important.)

Hi. I am sorry that so many folks have read this and not replied. I hear you. Many of the thoughts you expressed are thoughts I have as well. It is sad that there are many charities that exist to make money but only use a small portion of what is donated to help. And others that are simply misdirected.
I agree that what we each must do for the world is to work on ourselves and help each other. I think this is the best chance we all have. Once all of us are well and working properly then our world should be too. I think it is important to remember that we all make mistakes and not to judge anyone. Forgive. The past is over. Learn from it, move forward, help each other, and do better. I assume everyone wants good things and I think we can all be okay, especially helping each other. No one is your enemy- Unless it is you. Love your enemy and he becomes a friend.
Thanks for prodding me to share more; I tend to stay in a very narrow comfort zone. I do want to be helpful
Thanks Daniel. By the way, it rocks that you care for your friends and loved ones and you show your love for the world that way!
Hey Mike, thoughtful post. My personal opinion is pretty much along the lines of "think global, act local". I've given a lot to charities, national and international, in the past and don't have any sense that it's made a scrap of difference. In retrospect it seems like a bourgeois, conscience-salving act. Sometimes it seems downright imperialist.
So now I try to be a "good" person: giving as much of *me* as I can, to my wife, my son, my family and friends, my workmates, clients-and the people I encounter in the day-to-day.
I try when I can to limit my environmental impact.
I'm far from perfect, and I'm not changing the world-but I hope that in some tiny ways I'm making it a better, more constructive place.
