What Occupy Protesters Seem to Want

Observations from a Non-protester

Gayle Crabtree

A lot of people across the world are asking themselves what the Occupy protesters want. Some seem to perceive the movement has lack of structure because there isn't a leader to point to. The lack of an Occupy CEO or COO makes some people uncomfortable. When the Occupy protesters tell us what they want the message isn't always heard.

Let's face it. The world is used to finger pointing and placing blame somewhere. We want to blame others when something goes wrong. Having a C.O.O. or C.E.O. in charge of a corporation makes us feel comfortable. The world is organized and many people feel that things are the way they should be.

However, there are movements, markets and industries that aren't run by a single person or C.O.O. Many people seem to be comfortable even though there isn't an industry C.E.O. to blame when things go wrong.

People who are on the outside of Occupy and looking in perceive a lack of structure. Yet, the Twitter streams and Facebook indicate otherwise. Media and medic tents are being set up and staffed. Blankets are being given to Occupy protesters Food is being distributed. Lawns are being reseeded. Trash is being picked up.

For these things to be accomplished there has to be communication among Occupy members. There has to be a structure to get these things done.

Occupy protesters don't seem to be any hurry to give us a face or a name. The lack of a spokesperson seems to be causing governmental bodies some unease. Yet, in a way, doesn't it seem that the average person in the U.S. deals with similar uneasiness every day?

The public hears about the banking industry and the oil industry every day. These are industries without a face. Yet, we accept high gas prices and spiking bank fees. The finger points to blame the industry, the corporations and the government. As with the occupy movement there isn't any one person to and blame. We don't like it but we accept it.

There are people across the country have been out of work for months and are unable to find a job. The future looks bleak. Through the media the government and corporations tell us that the U.S. has lost jobs that are not coming back. We accept this and then we blame the unemployed for not doing enough to further their own future.

In a sense the Occupy protestors may not be different from corporations. Like corporations, they have have a structure but no single face that we can point out and blame. Occupy protesters are the unemployed and employed. They are veterans, students, entrepreneurs and medics. Occupy protestors are mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. Many of them look a lot like us.

We look at the Occupy protesters and wonder what they want. When they tell us we walk away and ask ourselves what they really want. We don't want to believe the truth that we see and hear in every camp. What do Occupy protesters want? The tweet streams and Facebook pages indicate that they want a future. That's all.

Come to think of it, isn't that what we all want?

@Laura, That may help guarantee a better future.

i thought the idea was that companies/corporations should not be able to buy politicians with their contributions and affect our laws (companies given same rights as individuals)

As I see it, the main problem with the Occupy movement isn't lack of leadership... it's the perceived lack of clearly articulated, easily understood, achievable goals. As long as "end corporate greed" and "end capitalism" are the primary mantras of the Occupy movement, nothing positive will come of it, and that is a shame. The movement's leaders should use Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and other leaders of peaceful protest, who did clearly articulate their ideals and goals, as their model.

Donald, They are not asking for more government. That is a scam perpetrated by people who want to think OWS is the Democratic solution to the tea party. They want a government that is not controlled by big corporations. At any rate, if you want to know what they want, don't turn to FOX News, turn to the OWS. They are talking enough to give you all the information you want.

    Gayle, great POV, as always.

By the way, I've been given a boat-load of information indicating this "movement" isn't really so leaderless after all.

What confuses me is how many of these protesters are insisting more government is the solution. Ha. It's excessive government that caused these issues. We all want a shot, but our politicians have sucked the air out of the opportunity. More of the same will only be worse.

    Thanks for the link-back.
