What do Old Wives Tales, Myths and Superstitions Have to Do with Making Babys?

Congratulations! You are trying to conceive... Are you eating chocolate? Is your husband wearing socks to bed? According to old wives, this may just effect the outcome of conceiving and just what gender your baby may be. Since the dawn of time, man (and women of course!) has wanted some control over when and how they conceive and what they are going to have. Even with medical science making all these new breakthroughs, how much is really in our hands?

So even with good old fashion lovemaking, some folks have a hard time having a baby. For those of us who don't, most of us would like to pick something a bit more gender specific than green or yellow. According to old wives one no-so-fun way to get pregnant is to stand on your head during intercourse, not much fun unless you are a gymnst. Another involves underwear, in the long drawn out battle of boxers vs. briefs it seems boxers win according to old wives, but men can relax knowing it doesn't really matter.

So what do old wives say about gender choice? Well, strangely enough the Chiense gender chart worked for me and my friend when we concieved our first child. We both had girls within a week of each other, then we had boys. We concieved at different times but I concieved my son during a month I should've had a girl according to the chart. Ten fingers, ten toes and a whole bunch of pink baby clothes (back in the closet). Thank goodness for an accurate ultrasound and baby showers!

How often are the old wives right and how much is left up to chance? Most of the time, old wives are right fifty percent of the time. While some tales may be all in fun, be careful how much you really invest into them. While most lore is well intentioned, always consult with a doctor and happy trails!
