What to Do with One of Your Thanksgiving Leftovers

Recycle Your Grease

Abby Greenhill
Today, Thanksgiving, is a big turkey day all over the United States . There will be birds roasted or fried. There will be thousands of pounds of potatoes boiled and mashed. Vegetables will abound and dinner rolls and biscuits will wait to be buttered. Pumpkin and sweet potato pies will end the meal.

What a great meal, what a great day. But then the worst part, clean-up after the meal. No problem, you have a dishwasher for the dirty dishes. You have containers for the leftovers. You have family members very willing to take home the last of the pies and other goodies.

Finally the kitchen is clean....but wait, what's that over there in the corner partially hidden from view? Grease and I don't mean the musical. The grease that your beautiful turkey produced is an eyesore and a problem. What can you do with it besides tossing it in the trash? You can recycle it, at least in Savannah, Georgia you can.

The city of Savannah, Georgia is requesting that residents recycle their grease and oil, the unfortunate leftovers of a Thanksgiving meal. The City is asking that residents put their grease into a container and on Monday take that grease for a ride to the recycling center.

What is the purpose of going out of your way to take your grease to the recycling complex? The purpose is to avoid people pouring grease down their drains and clogging up the city sewers and pipe lines. If the city sewers clog up, they can back-up into homes. I wouldn't even want to think about that mess!

According to Savannah officials, up to 70 percent of clogged sewers in the city are caused by people pouring grease down their drains. Naturally, the numbers increase at this time of the year.

So, put the good leftovers in the fridge, including the leftover turkey. Send Aunt Louise home with the pie. Put the grease in a container and dispose of it as requested by the City of Savannah, Georgia .

I would bet a drumstick that this is a problem that happens in many cities. No matter where you live, don't pour grease down your drain any time of the year!

Thanks for the tip about grease. As far as the rest of it, we don't have leftovers. It all disappears!

What a great idea for recycling! I didn't know people poured grease down their drains.

Recyle my turkey grease?! Whatever will I make my gravy from!

I wonder how succesful this was - it's hard to imagine too many people willing to make the trip to take a cup or two of grease to a recycling center. I'd think the majority of the people who would go out of their way like that are the ones who would never put grease down their drain anyways.

We learned early on to never ever pour grease down the sink, my father was a stickler about this rule. I was also, a clogged drain is very frustrating!

I didn't even know that grease was recyclable very interesting. I try to save some kind of container like an empty can or sour cream container or something to pour mine in to then, I wait for it to harden and then throw it in the garbage. I will check to see if my city has recycling for the grease or not and I will bring it there if it does, might as well recycle it if I can.

Great idea. Wish they could find an actual use for it.
