It is worth your time to check out what could be yours. For some, there is thousands of dollars to be claimed. This is certainly something that should be worth your time. But how would you know if you have unclaimed property to worry about?
There are a number of circumstances that can point toward a person that could potentially have unclaimed items. One of the top circumstances is someone who has been laid off, retired, or reassigned. The reason for this is because you may forget about a last pay check or even have money of your own in the company that is rightfully yours.
A common circumstance that people do not realize is forgetting to switch the mailing address after moving. Eventually you are going to remember when you are not getting any mail. But even a week or two could be too late. You could receive a check in the mail and not even realize you have one coming.
Along with forgetting to switch the mailing address, some people do not even read all of their mail. It may sound crazy, but you really could be a winner for some contest. There would be nothing worse than throwing away an envelope that is informing you of a contest you have won hundreds of thousands of dollars in. Take the time to read each piece of mail you get.
If you do determine that you have unclaimed property under your name, there are some things you will need to tell the state government. The first thing you will need is your complete legal name including the middle name and any initials, maiden name, or the exact name of your business. After giving that out, next you will need your social security number. The last two items you need is a daytime phone number and your current or previous street and city addresses.
Take the time to see if you fit the criteria for someone that could have unclaimed items. Once you have identified that you meet the criteria, look into it closer using the numerous tools the state government has provided. Finally, be ready with the items needed so you can claim what is rightfully yours.
