What To Pack: 5 Essential Items for A Weekend At Grandma's

Weekend Getaways for Children

Holly Matheson
When I was a child, spending quality time with grandma and grandpa was high among my list of favorite things to do. Weekend trips to visit grandparents are fun and filled with that certain love that only grandparents can give, often paving the way for memories your child will cherish for a lifetime to come. In the midst of all the excitement, you and your child are probably wondering what to pack for this weekend getaway. For a child, packing for a weekend trip can be a very intricate process, as children often feel as though packing their entire bedroom up for the trip is the only way to be truly prepared. With this packing list for vacation, you can narrow it down to five simple items that are must-haves for a weekend trip to grandma's.

Favorite Blanket

If your child has a favorite blanket that he or she prefers to sleep with, be sure that this is among the first items packed. It may be unlikely that this is a first consideration for your child when deciding what to pack, but it is important to remember. The last thing that anyone wants is an upset child who does not have his or her favorite blanket at bedtime.

Coloring Book/Crayons

Coloring books for kids are a great item for this weekend adventure. Your child will love the opportunity to be creative while creating a unique piece of artwork for Grandma to display proudly on her refrigerator. You can either go with a traditional coloring book or, if you prefer, opt instead a variety of your child's favorite Disney or movie characters with printable coloring pages that you can readily find online at such websites as Crayola.

Bedtime Story

Be sure when you're packing for a weekend trip that you include your child's favorite storybook to be read at bedtime. Sometimes it can be a little scary for kids to spend the night in a different bed. Having a bedtime story that grandma or grandpa can read will help to soothe and reassure your child as well as provide some energy to his or her creative mind while spending quality time with grandparents.

Movies/DVD's

Since this weekend is all about quality time with grandparents, only select one or two of your child's favorite movies for the weekend trip. Any more than that will only succeed in distracting from the purpose of the trip, and it's unlikely that Grandma and Grandpa would be pleased if their grandchild spent the weekend in front of the television.

Toys

There are likely toys to be found at Grandma's, but do include one or two of your child's favorite toys. It is likely that your child will insist on packing each and every toy that he or she owns, but narrow it down to those that he or she is most likely to play with.

Disposable Camera

Be sure to pack a disposable camera for the weekend trip to Grandma's. Your child will be able to put use to his or her creative side with photography while capturing memories that will be cherished for decades to come.
