What to Pack for Your Child for Summer Camp

Rebekah Haas
Before you know it, the school year is over and it is summer time again. For many children that means heading off to summer camp; whether it be day camp, weekly over-night camp, or "all summer" camp (where the child stays at the camp for the whole summer). As a parent, it is helpful to know what to pack for your child. Here are some guidelines based on "overnight" camp, but some of them will also apply to day campers:

1. Clothing: 4-6 pairs of shorts, 7 shirts, 2 sweatshirts, 1 pair of sweatpants, 2 pairs of jeans (or more if your camp is in a cold climate), 12 pairs of socks, 3 swimsuits, 8 pair of underwear, 1 jacket, 1 raincoat or poncho, 1 pair of sandals (for water activities/canoeing/swimming), 2 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of hiking-type shoes or boots.

2. Toiletries: soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, brush and comb, shampoo and conditioner, tissues, hair dryer, sunscreen.

3. Personal Items: flashlight, hat (sunhat or baseball cap), money for camp store, camera with film, books to read, stationary supplies (pens, stamps, paper), garbage or laundry bag for dirty clothing.

4. Other Items: Sleeping bag, sheets, pillow, water bottle or canteen, insect repellant, a musical instrument, snacks.

If your child is attending a specialty camp such as a sports camp, there will be other equipment he/she will need. A girl attending gymnastics camp will need leotards and work-out apparel and gear. A boy attending soccer camp will need protective gear such as knee pads, an athletic supporter, and shin guards.

Probably, the summer camp you have chosen for your child will also provide a list for packing. As a former camp counselor, I would recommend that you make sure you do not pack any items that are not allowed at camp (cell phones, knives, Gameboys).
This could get your child into trouble. Also, be sure to check the camp's policies about packing medication-as a safety precaution, it will probably need to be turned over to the camp nurse to administer.

Some camps will specify types of swimwear such as one-piece bathing suits only. Other camps may even require a specific uniform or adherence to a dress code. I strongly urge that you mark every toiletry and clothing item with your child's name, as things tend to "disappear" at summer camp, especially in the bathroom. Be sure to check the weather before your child leaves, and pack appropriately.

Summer camp means fun activities and new friends for children. Packing everything your child needs will help him or her enjoy their time at camp even more.
