What to Pack when Taking Your Chihuahua RV Camping

Christie Silvers
Taking man's best friend on a camping trip is one of the small joys of owning a cute little chihuahua. However, you can't just jump in the RV and head on down the road without taking a few minutes to pack not only for yourself, but also for your little four-legged friend. Here are a few items that should be on the packing list for any dog going camping, but especially for the small chihuahua who needs a lot of attention and security.

Medically Necessary: Any time your chihuahua is going to be around other dogs, or in places that other dogs have been, he needs to be up-to-date on all of his shots, especially the parvovirus vaccine. Have your vet's phone number and e-mail address available in case of an emergency. If your chihuahua is on any special medication, be sure to always pack it when taking him RV camping.

Warm & Comfy: If your chihuahua has been trained to sleep in a crate and/or bed, don't forget to pack them into the RV before heading out. Bringing along his bed, blanket and favorite toys will make the RV camping transition flow more smoothly for both of you.

Safety Is Key: When packing to take your chihuahua camping, always remember to bring along his leash and harness. If using a collar, be sure to have a spare in case the first one breaks. And don't forget to check his dog tag for current information. It only takes a few minutes to have a new tag made, and possibly prevent the loss of your beloved pup.

Training: All chihuahua puppies should have some sort of training, and that training will last long after the puppy stage. No matter how old your little one is, never travel without packing his training items. Whether you use a clicker or small treats, there's no reason to stop, or postpone dog training just because you're going RV camping. Training is more important now that you're in an unfamiliar environment than ever before.

Cleanliness: If you're planning to be camping for more than a few days, you may want to bring along your chihuahua's grooming products--shampoos, combs, hairbrushes, toothbrush, etc. If he's going to be in wooded areas a lot during the trip, be sure to check him often for fleas and ticks and caring for him immediately if either are spotted. Lastly, don't forget about plastic baggies. no one wants to accidentally discover any little surprises your chihuahua left behind. Clean up after Fido and everyone will be happy.

Very helpful information, some we'll most likely be using when we start travelling with our two little dogs, are bigger dogs we'll have to leave with friends, I think.
