The phrase Panda Trading can refer to a company called Panda Trade that was founded in 2008 and focuses on different aspects of financial trading and wealth management, or it can refer to the trading of a series of bonds issued by China in the middle of the last decade called Panda Bonds. Most notably, in the foreign exchange sector of the market, it refers to the trading of Chinese currency.
Typically, investors make money through foreign exchange futures trading. To do this sort of trade, investors will make a projection about the relationship between two currencies. For instance, the investor will state that on a certain date they will make a trade for a certain amount of Chinese Yuan for a certain amount of American Dollars. If, for instance, they promise to trade 1 Chinese Yuan for .16 United States Dollars, and the exchange rate on that day is actually 1 Yuan for .15 Dollars, they will make one cent for every Yuan they have agreed to trade. Conversely if the exchange rate that day is 1 Yuan for .17 Dollars, they will lose one cent for every Yuan they trade. Obviously, the amount of Yuan to be traded will have been preset when the original future was determined. The deal can also be discussed in terms of Dollars per Yuan by reversing the math.
In many cases, the investors can choose to do option trading which works essentially the same as futures trading, but the investor retains the option of whether or not to exercise the trade in question. If the trade is not favorable to them, they do not have to act, and they will only lose the money that was used to initially set up the deal.
Although Panda Currency Trading could refer to a few different topics, it typically refers to trades made concerning US and Chinese currency, and as China's economy continues to grow, these trades can become potentially very lucrative.
