What Are the Parental Consequences Sexual Selection

Sexual selection has many advantages. Parents have the ability to choose the gender that they want the most. In terms of gender, a lot of parents want a balance of children. In modern American society, it is seen as more desirable to have a boy and a girl, as opposed to 2 or more children of the same sex. If one wants to fit the nuclear family mold, sexual selection gives them the opportunity to do so. Image and conformity are strongly associated with social mobility. Sexual selection is another way for families to conform to society's standards.

Sexual selection also has so disadvantages as well! It takes away some of the spontaneity of having a child. If we start altering genes before a child is even born, it can lead to a decrease in differences, uniqueness, and individuality. Sexual selection could also lead to a disproportionate amount of men and women in the world. This procedure would be ideal if the world ever is in a situation where we don't have enough of gender. Having 60% of one gender and 40% of another would affect population growth. Sexual selection could create this problem as well. If parents are allowed to choose the gender of their child, one gender will be favored more than the other.

Sexual selection itself, in my opinion, is not unethical. In a society that has already legalized abortion and the death penalty, sexual selection doesn't even seem like that big of a deal! If we allow people to choose whether or not they want their child to be born, we can certainly allow them to choose the sex. Sexual selection isn't harming human life. While I don't disagree with sexual selection, I do disagree with the motivations.

Control is really the bigger issue at hand. Why do Americans want to control every aspect of their lives? Is it really that important to determine the sex of one's child? Is that child going to be loved less based on the gender? If so maybe that adult shouldn't have a child in the first place. Americans need to learn how to except things that are not in their control. There are some questions that will never be answered. There are going to be some things that we will not be able to control. Society as a whole has gotten very far without being able to control everything.
