What You Have to Do to Pass the Navy SEALs' Fitness Test

Tom Servo

The United States Navy SEALs is a special division of the Navy reserved for elite sailors in top physical condition. SEALs have to go on special, covert missions that require more expertise and training than an ordinary sailor in the Navy. The Navy SEALs have that own fitness test that anyone interested in becoming a SEAL must pass. The test consists of five exercises that must be completed in a certain amount of time.

Before reading any further, keep in mind the Navy SEALs are looking for the best, not just anyone who can pass the test. You should always strive for numbers better than the minimum requirements to pass each portion of the test.

Swimming Challenge

The first portion of the test is the swimming portion. To pass this part of the test, you will have to swim 500 yards in 12 minutes and 30 seconds or less. To be competitive, you should try to complete this challenge in less than 11 minutes. Fewer than 10 minutes would be optimal.

Push-ups Challenge

The second portion of the test is the pushup challenge. To pass the portion of the test you will have to complete 42 pushups in 2 minutes. At the very least, you should strive for 100 pushups. Doing 42 pushups in two minutes is impressive compared to the average person, but compared to anyone in the military, it is nothing to brag about.

Sit-ups Challenge

The third portion of the test is the sit-up portion. Keep in mind, these are sit-ups, not crunches. To pass this portion of the test you will have to do 52 sit-ups in two minutes. Again, to be competitive, you should strive for 100 sit-ups.

Pull-ups Challenge

The fourth portion of the test is the pull-up challenge. You have to do eight pull-ups in a row to pass this portion of the test. This is the only portion that is not timed. Doing eight pull-ups in a row is fairly easy for a fit person, so you should strive for 15 to 20.

Running Challenge

The last portion of the test is the running challenge. You have to run 1.5 miles in 11 minutes and 30 seconds or less to pass this portion of the test. Most people will finish the distance in less than the allotted amount of time, so you should try to complete it in about 10 minutes or less.
