What is a Performance Review?

Shannon Frye
Performance reviews are quite funny because they act somewhat like report cards when you were a child. You knew there was a report card coming and you would try everything to suck up to everyone in order to get good comments and grades on your report card. This is very similar to what a performance review is. Your boss will determine how well you are doing and what to give you for it as an incentive. Perhaps your boss will give you a raise. If you aren't doing very well this might be a time that your boss tells you to take a hike as well.

This often times will scare people because you never know what to expect. Perhaps you've been doing something wrong or you messed something up recently and you will not get any type of raise. Perhaps your boss feels that you have done a wonderful job and your boss will give you a dollar raise. You never know what to expect so you will often times expect something bad to happen from the performance review. This is why it's important to always give your best at the job you are at. Even if you don't like your job you need to treat the job like it's important and do what you need to get done, on time.

Everybody will receive a performance review. You are not all by yourself in this game. Everybody is in the same boat that you are. Nobody knows what to expect and they are all thinking like you are. Often times your boss will tell everybody the same basic information about what needs to be done and what you've accomplished. This is not something that has come up just to single you out. It's actually serving as more of an incentive than anything and should be treated like one. If you've worked really hard this year you know what you will get and what you deserve. If you don't do anything than you should have reason to worry.

Always listen to everything that is stated at the review. Never get upset and start yelling at the person who is giving you your review. Perhaps this person is not the person you should be talking to. You want to take this information and respond to it. If they tell you that you need to pick up the pace and get more things done, do what they tell you to so you can get a better performance review next year. This is somewhat like parent teacher conferences. If there's something you're doing wrong, they will definitely tell you what needs to be done.
