What to Do with Your Pointless Holiday Gifts

The Gag Gift Exchange

Jen
It is inevitable, every year you receive at least one of those gifts. You know the ones...the dancing reindeer or the themed pajamas you wanted when you were five. Every family has the one person that gives the pointless, yet slightly entertaining gifts. If you have any tact, you are too polite to let the person know what a crazy gift you think it is, so what do you do with them? Host a gag gift party!

This is similar to a white elephant gift...one that makes people laugh even though they have no use for it. All you need to do is invite all of your friends over for a night of gift exchanging with some snacks and drinks. Tell everyone to bring a gift they received during the holidays that they just have no use for and make sure it's wrapped. Don't worry, this type of re-gifting is acceptable.

When it comes to planning you don't have to worry about much. Have some easy snacks and some drinks available but that's about it. The entertainment of the night will be provided by the gag gift exchange. It won't take too long but the gifts you get will likely be great conversation starters and keep the party going.

After everyone arrives and have had a few drinks (makes the gift exchange even more humorous but not totally necessary) it's time to start. Pile all the wrapped gag gifts in the middle of everyone and decide who will start, you can go by age or draw numbers or just the order everyone happens to be sitting in, whatever works best for you. Person one picks any gift they want, but don't let them open it yet. The second person then either picks a new gift from the pile or can take person one's gift. This continues on until everyone has a wrapped gift in front of them.

Now comes the fun part of opening the gifts. Since everyone is bound to have a funny and entertaining gift, only let one person open a gift at a time so everyone can get some laughs out of it. The person who brought the gift may even have a story that attempts to explain why they received this crazy gift. You still end up with a pointless gift to take home, but it wasn't the one you started with and you got to have a fun night with friends.
