What Questions to Ask when Recording for EVP

Sample Questions to Get You Started

Jill O'Malley
There are many different questions that you may choose to ask during an E.V.P. session. If you find, or already have some, that you feel are getting good results then please share them with others so that we can all gain from the experience.

Try to start your session by explaining to the ghost or spirit (out loud) what exactly you are trying to accomplish. You want to explain to them how the device you are using is able to capture their voice or image and how the process works when you play it back. It may help to actually point to the microphone while explaining how it works so that they can try and direct any comments in that direction (if they can see you). You want to also ask, not tell them, to speak as clearly and loudly as possible so that you might be able to hear them better on playback. Allow about 10-30 seconds between each question before another is asked to give the spirit ample time to answer you. Please try to verbally note all background sounds that you may hear while recording so that you will not mistake them for actual E.V.P. when processing your recordings later.

Here are a few sample questions that are commonly used by investigators during a Q & A session:

Is there anyone here that would like to talk to us?

Can you tell us your name?

How old are you?

Why are you here?

Are you sad or angry?

Are you alone?

How many of you are here?

What is your favorite color?

Do you know what year it is?

If so, please tell me/us.

Can you tell us what happened to you?

Can you see us?

What do we look like?

What color is your hair?

Do you know my name?

Would you like us to leave?

Is there any way that we can help you?

Can you show us what you look like?

Is someone keeping you here?

Are you afraid where you are?

Do you have anything to tell us?

Be sure to end your recording by letting the spirit(s) know that you are now going to listen to your recording. Let them know that if you hear anything from them you will return to communicate with them further (only if that is the truth of course). Make sure you thank them for their time and be sure to say goodbye at the end of your recording while allowing a wait for a possible response. I have had a lot of spirits tell me goodbye. It is a great way to end your conversation with them.

On June 12, 1959, Friedrich Jurgenson accidentally discovered EVP while trying to record bird sounds. This first recording is what set him off to be one of the first to study EVP.

my friends and I were doing an evp session in a graveyard about two hours and he asked " do u like it here, do you like your plot". I swear to your it said "yes.." I dont know if anyone has ever said that statement I'm sure someone out there has but it was random and elicited a responce, along with his girlfriend talking about seeing something move and talking about it.

My highest suggestion would be to upload your audio recordings to a computer, and run it through AUDACITY. It is a free Audio Software to help save and enhance your recordings. I ALSO use VLC Media software to listen to my EVP's once I found them and saved to my computer. With VLC I can LOOP the audio....This helps others that don't have the practice or best of hearing. It helps bring out the voices to be able to loop the quite part. You notice I use the word PRACTICE. It will take some practice from anyone, even if you have GOOD hearing. These voices have a certain characteristic pattern that you will learn to HEAR before you are even able to actually hear the voices.....parts will suddenly pop out at you. THEN you can circle in and work on it :) Good Luck

Hello everyone, these questions are great, however if you want to have sucsess w/E.V.P. your best option would to talk to the dead as you would anyone else. i have gathered over 100 EVP's and not becuase im phycic or have an ability unfarmiliar to anyone else, but rather becuase when im collecting voices from beyond, i am doing so with pure intent to seek answers and assist those whom are stuck/unable to cross over for what ever reason. you whouldnt walk up to just anyone and start a conversation, would you? I wouldn't. you have to biuld a repport w/spirits as you would friends and family. when you go to an area, presumed haunted, tell them your name, the year and say hello for god sakes. Tell them about your day, they may have advice. ask them how they are, what thier up to, and if theres anything that you can do to help. Bottom line spirits are people, people that have lived and died, yet still possess a meaning, protect that meaning, appreciate that meaning, and sucsess will follow.

Nice tips, I have tried to get EVP without any results in the past. I am about ready to try again.

Very informative. It would have been nice to have someone able to ask these questions when I had my spirit experiences.
