What is R4 Code on a Military DD214 Form?

Kimberley Riccio
A DD214 is a military discharge government form. The form is used by all active duty and reserve components of the military. The Air National and Army National Guard uses a DD22 for that provides the same information. This form is given to an individual upon their discharge or retirement. The form contains information about the service of the individual. Such information includes characterization of service, separation code, and re-entry code or re-enlistment code.

Function

The code of R4 on both the DD214 and DD22 is an re-entry code. It's function is to allow recruiters and retention officers to determine the individual's future eligibility to enlist or reenlist.

Location

The re-entry code is located in block 27, located on the lower right side of the DD214. On a National Guard form 22, the re-entry code is located block 26, located on the lower right side of the form.

Types

Each branch of the military has their own set of codes and means. The navy for example uses RE1 through RE4. RE1 is an eligible for reenlistment code. RE2 is and Ineligible for reenlistment code due to a reserve retired. An RE3 code could be an ineligible due to some failure to meet standards or requirements. An RE3 could also be a hardship discharge due to family obligations. An RE-R is a non-eligibility re-enlistment code. This could be due to some sort of misconduct or medical problem.

Misconceptions

Some re-entry codes may need a waiver for re-enlistment to take place. A R4 code cannot be waived; however, an appeal can be present before a board to have the code changed. For example in the Navy, you need to submit a request to change the code to the Bureau of Personnel (BUPERS). After you receive a response, submit a request to change the code must to the Board for Correction of Naval Records.
