What is the Real Secret?

The Secret DVD is All the Rage...but What is the Real Law of Attraction?

Paula Neal Mooney
The Secret DVD has been on my mind since I first saw it on Oprah.

I asked my readers, "Is The Secret Anti-Christian?"

I picked up these biblical truths from the book:

• To act as if we already have the blessing we've prayed for...
• To give, and it shall be given unto us...
• To enter into God's gates with thanksgiving...
• Speak in the positive -- call those things that be not as if they already are...

I put The Secret tips into practice and had my $97.42 Amex bill paid after the $5,000.00 I've earned online paid other bills.

I leaned on faith and wrote out the check, called on my tither's rights, stuck the bill in my Bible and rested it on Malachi 3:10:

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

My bill was paid.

I mulled over buying The Secret DVD in Barnes & Noble, but first asked for a sign.

I look up directly at a sign that read, "Try it before you buy it."

I'm a mature enough Christian to know that the Lord is not the magic genie depicted in some of The Secret promos, but I also know that He uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise.

Whatever The Secret teachers are teaching, may they also stress the all-important John 3:16 and mightily uphold John 14:6:

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' "

Hi read the article but it seems as though you, as well as other people who commented on it, have missed the point of the 'Secret' and it's teachings.

    1. The 'Secret' is NOT anti-christ nor is it full of lies. It is a life law that is real and has always been and will always be around. In fact it comes from the Bible. Read Proverbs 4:23 in the New Century Version as well as Matthew 9:29 from the NIV and you will see what I'm talking about.

    2. The 'Secret' is also correct in telling people we have the power to change our lives and circumstances b/c it is true. Ask, believe, and receive comes directly out of the New Testament which in fact is mentioned in the dvd and book. In Proverbs King Solomon talked about how wisdom is supreme and without wisdom your life won't become what it's meant to be. Well without the wisdom of knowing that you can change your life based on your actions, attitude, and habits you will always get the same thing.

    3. Please also realize that you cannot learn from what you despise, envy, hate, or don't respect. The teaching of the secret comes from the Bible period. It's just that it's been repackaged and retold but you must always look to God first to lead and guide you in your steps AFTER you first plan them. (proverbs scripture).

I am with Joel and Lori B. When someone told me about The Secret and said it teaches you how to be successful in life, myself and the person I was talking to, being Christian, I automatically assumed it must be about God.. But no. I got handed a copy today, skim-read what I could bear to and saw no mention of God.. Christianity was only mentioned when lumped in with all other religion. That is heresy - Jesus is the TRUTH. The Secret is lies and makes you believe YOU hold the power and not God. Stay away!!

    Paula,
Good article. Like you, I've looked at buying the book or the video, then decided to check it out at the library. When I finally made it to the top of the waiting list at the library, I somehow just never had the time to go pick it up. Taking that as my "sign", I decided to stick with the Savior, not the Secret, and his Dad. After all, they've helped me all these years and I know and rely on them. The real secret is learning how to talk to God and honor him in all you do.

I wrote an article about The Secret when that book first came out- it's based on an old concept of positive thinking that has never quite been provne. The Secret's success is more due to effective marketing than anything else.

Good article. I was shocked the first time I heard that someone thought that The Secret was unchristian. The book is full of positive thoughts. I just don't get what the problem could possibly be. I do think it was mistitled it should be called A Secret, not The Secret.

"The Secret" is the doctrine of devils. Thats the REAL secret! If there is anything that leads you away from Christ, tells you that Christ is not a savior, or tells you that there is no sin, no real hell/heaven, preaches that we will not be held accountable for our actions, or that a just God does not exist, or any mixture of these, it's quite simply the doctrine of devils!

    Paula,
I didn't know the Secret was considered Anti-christian. I should have known. The Secret is a joke and foolish. Correct me if I am wrong. Isn't there a line in the bible that says. God helps those who helps themselves? Meaning, God doesn't tolerate slackers! Hehe. Great article.
