What Really Works for Losing the Baby Weight

Colleen Starr
As a new mom I struggled to lose the baby weight. After having a baby I, like many moms expected the weight would magically fall off. After all, I ate healthy during my pregnancy and I was breast feeding. Doctors will tell you breastfeeding is a great way to feed your baby and lose weight at the same time. My hopes were high, I just knew it would be easy. I had seen stories of Hollywood stars looking perfect just weeks after having a child. Surely I could do it too.

Reality set in after a few months that is was going to take more then nursing my baby and eating healthy to get back in shape and lose the baby weight. As a nursing mom, I knew I could not drastically diet. If you try to go on a strict diet while breastfeeding, your milk production can go down. I did the only logical thing-exercise. To get back into exercising, I started taking daily walks with my baby in the stroller. After the walks my body started to feel better and my energy increased. After a few weeks I started using an elliptical machine while my daughter took a nap. I started to notice that I felt great and I was losing the baby weight. Exercising gives me time to myself to think and plan my day ahead. I also feel much less stressed out after I exercise.

There is no magic way to lose weight after having a baby. Diet and exercise is the key to being healthy for myself and for my kids. I am now healthier than before I had children. I can run fast enough to keep up with four children and still have the energy to make dinner and survive bath time tantrums. Superwoman eat your heart out!
